I was working in a comic store (part time) when First started. I was blown away by the quality of their titles. American Flagg & Nexus are two of my favorites from the 80's.
Anyone else a fan of First Comics?

Dynamo Joe is my favorite series from First, a rather underrated comic about giant robots ala Robotech. Fantastically colored with amazing art, I can't recommend it enough. I'm also a fan of the Warp series, which was based off a forgotten 70's Broadway play. It's a strange series, but I enjoyed it. Broadway poster for Warp: I still need to check out the Elric books at some point.

I haven't really read a whole lot. Going through their Wiki now.
Off the top of my head I had their TMNT reprint books, the color reprint trades. I have read an issue of Classics Illustrated One issue of E Man (because of an Omaha appearance I think) One issue of Evangeline (I thought it was awesome, forgot all about it until now, I'll have to hunt down more) I didn't know Lone Wolf And Cub was published through First. I'm reading through that now, reprints though. I have both Munden's Bar issues.
I have more that I haven't read yet, just been hoarding. I have some American Flagg!, some Elric, some Jon Sable. All unread so far though.

American Flagg! was the only one I followed faithfully, though I know people who are big fans of Jon Sable.

Picked up a lot of Jon Sable a few years ago when my store got a lot of them for cheap and got the trades of Grimjack that recently came out.

I have complete runs of Badger, Nexus and Dreadstar. All excellent series. Starslayer was a nice Mike Grell book too.

In my opinion, from top to bottom, First Comics produced the strongest line of comics the industry has ever seen. Throughout the '80s, every book had a very high level of quality, even the books that were too ambitious for the technological limitations of the time like Shatter, which, if nothing else, was a worthy experiment. Quality ebbed when Mike Gold left, but from '82-'86, First was hitting on all cylinders, and they'd continue producing at a high level until the year when they folded.

Jon Sable and Grimjack are favorites of mine. They had so many great titles. Dreadstar, American Flagg, Nexus. What Image is trying to do now is just a reflection of what First set up 30 years ago.

Never read a single First Comic and don't own any either.
Same for Valiant.

Never read a single First Comic and don't own any either. Same for Valiant. Both companies were very good at the beginning. Worth a try and many of the First books are cheap to get.

Loved Nexus. Enjoyed Badger. Didn't really check out any of their other titles. Badger was just awesome because the concept of an insane Hero was fresh. Dreadstar was Starlin Space opera goodness until he left the book. Nexus was okay.
