Here's another thought - the Ayurveda tradition from India says that there are six basic tastes, and that we need all six - sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent. Making sure that you get at least a little of all of them helps you feel satisfied and helps you get all the food groups and nutrients you need. Google 'ayurveda six tastes' for lots more info.

First bike commute for nearly a month yesterday - went really well, felt strong and completely monstered the hills in high gears. Pace was nowhere near my best, but that's as much a function of traffic and traffic lights as anything, and the ever-present headwind. Anyway, happy for that and about to go for day 2 shortly (waiting for band of rain to pass).
Weight today is 190.6, tantalisingly close to rolling the 2nd digit...
Retired 2 pairs of trousers last night as too baggy; tried on 2 pairs of my next-tranche trousers this morning - also too baggy! Now, onto the next set.

Went to dinner last night with one of my best friends who is moving to the other side of the country next week. Not counting today at all. Maybe not tomorrow either. I don't think I want to see that I've gained after all this.
Back on monday.

Can't remember if I've posted this before, but this post is an excellent guide to nutrition and calculating what your calorie baseline is / how much you need to eat to lose/gain weight. Most of the rest of the forums can be safely ignored - there is some great information available on there and some really helpful people, but there's also an awful lot of bro-science and tedious testosterone-overdosed jocks

Most of the rest of the forums can be safely ignored - there is some great information available on there and some really helpful people, but there's also an awful lot of bro-science and tedious testosterone-overdosed jocks I've read info like this in the past and it shows that the calories vary depending on your weight. BMR used to be calculated as your current weight times 13. (200 x13=2600 calories a day) In this example a 200 pound man has to eat less than that amount of calories in order to realize a weight loss. I guess the problem is that once you lose, the calorie consumption has to go down. This particular formula might be outdated of course. If you weigh 200 pounds, you can't eat like a 200 pound man and expect to lose weight. The good part is that it doesn't have to all come from eating. If you exercise, that burns calories as well. You're a great example of that , Garth.

Swam nearly 1/2 Mile this morning and did it 53 Minutes! ... Or 800 Meters or 16 Laps! ... You need to swim a 1/2 mile under a hour to order to qualify for Water Polo.

Hey, guys. Still working out. Had some tough spots where I had to cut back on my exercising (injured foot, allergy attacks so bad that I am amazed I am not considered asthmatic), but I am back on track now. I am still losing weight, shirts and pants are still getting bigger on me. My husband has lost about 20 lbs. He's a bit less of a baby about working through his aches and pains than I am. Hope everyone is well!

As you all may know, I was on medical leave from work about a month ago and I put on weight. I am currently dropping the weight but I'm not satisfied with just that, I want to keep losing. I think this thread will help because you all are pretty dedicated to your weight loss and maybe that's the support I need!

Thanks! Here's my current regimen: I am working out three times a week (various exercises with each day) and I am eating a lot better.

Ok. . 1st "official" weigh in: 9/20: 244.8# hmm. .I managed to lose 3 lbs since the Dr. visit? Possible I guess, from all that walking at Dragon*con, and then being sick and just not eating much. let's see if I can keep it up. Next weigh in on Wed. 2nd weigh in, and despite being "good" all week, and getting some good exercise: 9/23: 244.8# On the one hand, it's not any GAIN, which is good. .but I've actually been trying, so a bit of a disappointment to be EXACTLY the same as I was 3 days ago . . I was hoping for at least .02 difference. Oh well. . at least I'm dedicated to trying, so let's give this a few weeks and see how it goes. Sorry I didn't respond to this sooner! At the very beginning, it may take some time to see loss. Most important things to do at the start is to get plenty of water, watch your salt intake, and don't eat two hours before bed. Best of luck, man. Hang in there!

You'll see rapid weight loss at first because that's your body changing but once your body catches on to what you're doing, you'll start losing a little at a time. With that said, don't get discouraged a loss of .02 is still a loss! .02 loss is better than a .02 gain!

You're a great example of that , Garth. Well, it depends - your base metabolism (ie what you burn just from sitting there to keep your muscles and organs alive) is mostly proportional to your lean body mass (and your overall level of physical activity). So, if you're dieting only and your weight comes down, the number of calories to support metabolism will come down a bit as you'll lose a bit of lean body mass as well as fat - particularly crash dieting where the starvation survival mode kicks in and the body preserves fat at the cost of lean mass. However, if you're exercising enough to add lean mass, you get a virtuous circle where you're dropping weight and burning more calories to support base metabolism of increased lean body mass. That page I linked has a calculation based on lean body mass, which is more accurate than overall body weight, but requires the reader to somehow derive their LBM, which is difficult unless they have some device for measuring their body fat percentage.

On the off-chance there's anyone reading this thread in the UK, Aldi have a load of cycling gear in one of their "special sale until it's gone" promotions at the moment - loads of decent gear at very good prices.
If you're in the US... well, Aldi have a nice promotion on tools, which is not quite as useful/relevant (though I suppose you could work off a load of calories chopping wood with their axe)

Starting Weight: 271 PoundsWeek 1 - 270.5 Week 1 - 272.5 (Monday, after the 4th) Week 2 - 270.5 Week 3 - 269.2 Week 4 - 268.0 Week 5 - 267.5 Week 6 - 266.0 Week 7 – 265.0 Week 8 - ? Week 9 – 263.0 Week 10 – 262.4 Week 11 – 262.0 Week 12 – 262.0My weight stayed the same from previous week - so with Water Polo starting next week and that's should make a significant drop of weight. I did not workout today because I have to pick up a friend from the Airport and I've managed to get myself weigh at the gym just in time of opening in the morning and walked around the track for a mile before heading home.
