So my wife brought home a surprise for me today...2 bank file boxes full of Silver/Bronze comics and magazines for me to appraise/grade for one of her clients. I've helped my wife's aunt before who runs an estate sale business get comics ready for a sale giving her broad strokes on condition and how to grade the books, and I've helped out a few friends who have run LCS do the same in the past, but apparently this client knew my wife's aunt and had asked my wife if I would be willing to go through some boxes of comics for him as he runs an auction business and had acquired a collection from somewhere and didn't know where to begin on going about getting it ready for an auction. He had tried going to a couple of lcs in the area who didn't want to look at it or gave him lowball offers to buy it outright, so asked my wife if I would be willing to take a look at them.
I just spent an hour flipping through the collection-the first thing I saw was a Marvel Treasury of Conan laying on top, but I'd say 95% is G-VG range, so mostly reading copies, but there are some interesting books and other items in there as well (a lot of rock memorabilia-posters of Cream, Santana, etc. photos of the Beatles, some 45s like Iron Man/Paranoid by Sabbath, etc.) and comics ranging from Classics Illustrated to the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and just about everything in between. The only real key I noticed on first glance was a Marvel Spotlight 5-first Ghost Rider. There are a lot of 80 page Giant DC books, a few Silver Amazing Spideys and other classic Marvel titles, a lot of horror anthology books (DC, Marvel, Charlton and Gold Key), a bunch of Marvel Collector's Item Classics, a chunk of National Lampoon, Eerie, Creepy, Cracked, Drag Cartoons, etc.
It's going to take me a while to go through all of it, but I love just riffing through old comics and such, so it should be enjoyable. Some of the things might be a challenge tracking down info on though.

Wow! What a find! So envious. Also looking forward to pix!

A few years back, I was in the same situation when my wife brought home an oversized canvas tote bag filled to the brim with unbagged Bronze Age comics. A colleague of hers wanted my expert opinion on their worth. I quoted a price range and also gave advice on how to unload them. It all ended up sounding like too much work to the colleague, so he just told my wife I could have them. Awesome as that was, the thrill of first going through them was somehow even better.

Yes, pictures please!
I recently assisted someone in selling off a collection. He was baffled that all I wanted was a handful of comics as payment. I was just elated to play around with comics, even if it meant taking some time to grade and list online. The end was worth it and the comics I got were not necessarily super rare but definitely scored a lot that I really wanted in my collection. I wish I lived in an area where I could meet more potential sellers and help them out. Or at least look at piles of comics.

Weird we're talking about this cause I'm in the process of doing the same thing for a friend of ours.
It's mostly 90's crap, but there's an Amazing Spider-Man # 300, a New Gods # 1, a fair Fantastic Four # 49 and one or two others that escape me at the moment.
If anyone's interested, message me.

I wish I could stumble upon a large collection of mags. I've found a few here and there though.

About 2 years ago, a co worker handed me a big plastic shopping bag of magazines. I guess he knew I collected comic books. Inside were Epic Illustrated, Heavy Metal and other Marvel magazines. Years ago, I sold my Epic collection and I was surprised to see that among the books, was the first appearance of Dreadstar.

Damn, that's the kind of score I'm waiting for. I am talking to someone on Craigslist right now who seems to have acquired a large collection but doesn't know a thing about comics. I had to give him magazine measurements because he didn't know what I meant when I said "Magazine sized comics."
I also asked if he had black and white comics (Because there was no way I was going to be able to explain self published comics to him without getting a whole lot of Pitt and Spawn) and anything outside the superhero genre. I'll see what he says

First batch of photos, this is roughly half the first box worth of comics.... Some interesting things, a lot of Classics Illustrated and horror books in this batch, but other tidbits as well... camera-phone needed to charge, so I may get some more done later tonight, if not later this week. -M

The last bit of the first box... There's a second box, but will be a day or two at least before I get to photos of it-it's got a lot of Warren mags and National Lampoons in it, plus all the rock memorabilia. -M

I have dreams where I stumble upon scores like that, but I've never come close.
But then, my reality as an unorganized packrat is that I'm constantly finding cool stuff that I've forgotten I own.
