The one-and-only time I consciously* bought multiples was so I could hang the cover of Superman #252 up in my room and still have an intact copy.
Cei-U! I summon the Neal Adams classic!
* I still occasionally buy duplicates when shopping at cons but that's only because something didn't get written down somewhere along the line

I did buy the five different versions of adjectiveless X-Men #1 when they came out. NEVAH AGAIN!
I also bought a second issue of Savage Tales #2 when it turned out the first one was missing a page. But that's more frustration at work that an astute speculative move.

As far as Rat Queens being made into a TV show, you might not want to hold your breath. I have Deadworld scripts from the 90's for a movie that never happened. I've heard of Dead@17 being "in development" for a decade. They even had a cast at one point years back. There has been talk of an Elfquest movie since before I was born, and hardly a year goes by without another movie announcement. Haven't seen it in decades, but somewhere I've still got (I hope) at least one of the buttons for the Sgt. Rock movie that was just around the corner back in the late '80s. They were part of the bags of freebies given out to people attending Worldcon in New Orleans in 9/88.

I haven't. I don't have the time, energy, money, or acumen to be able to figure out what's going to be "hot". Pretty much all my duplicates have been due to failing memory, which has been helped considerably since I got a program for my Kindle that tracks what I have.

I've bought copies of things I already had if I really liked them and saw them at a good price (like less than $2): Kaluta's Shadow 1-3, Englehart/Rogers run on Mr. Miracle, Collins/Beatty Johnny Dynamite mini.
When the fist Legends of the Dark Knight came out with four different color outer covers, i think I bought two different ones, but I think those were the last issues I ever bought.

Oh, definitely. In fact, when I read your reference to a Dead@17 movie (which I don't believe I knew about), for some odd reason I read that as Hack/Slash & nodded knowingly. (I bought both series -- well, I guess D@17 was actually a string of miniseres -- regularly back in the day.)

I've not generally been interested in speculating, but did come upon an opportunity many years ago. I found a discount store selling those 4-packs of comics real cheap, and it included the last 2 issues of New Mutants, which I needed to finish my run. It also included X-Force #1, so I decided to buy a couple packs as an investment.
Well, those X-Force #1s still aren't worth much, but the packs also included New Mutants #98, the first appearance of Deadpool, which can go for a couple hundred bucks in high grade today. I really need to dig those babies out and turn them into money (or into other comics!).

To bring it back to Rat Queens, though, after hearing Cold Water and Jez talk about it, I tried the series out and it really struck me as something that was going to get big. The fans that like it, love it and are very vocal about it. It's really getting a dedicated fan community online and in the cosplay world as well. So even though the print run for #1 was artificially inflated due to dealers ordering tons of extra copies to get the Fiona Staples 1:10 chase variant, I decided to end my two decade hiatus from speculation and I bought 20+ copies of the regular #1 last month. I sold 10 of them today for $100 total, so I've already made a profit and still have 12 copies left for myself if it ends up getting any bigger. That may not pay the rent, but it's a win in my book. Definitely a win. One thing though, although the Fiona variant did encourage dealers to order extra copies of the regular #1, it still went to a 2nd printing, which makes me think there aren't wads of copies laying around everywhere (especially if a #1 is going for a tenner...compared to some of the new Marvel NOW #1s which I got for 99 cents). Rat Queens has been nominated for best new series in this year's Eisner awards...I think it has a good shot. The source got me another copy of the convention variant...nice owning 2/300 of these things

The source got me another copy of the convention variant...nice owning 2/300 of these things There were wads of copies lying around right up until the TV announcement. I bought my copies off ebay last month from dealers who were selling in lots of 10, which cinched it for me that they were extras ordered to get the chase variant. At the time there were 5 or 6 dealers with lots of ten copies each. I happened to be on ebay looking at Rat Queens #1 when the announcement came through, and there was still one dealer who had a lot of 10 copies available for $59.99 Buy It Now. And plenty of other single copies around for $4-6 plus shipping. Those all vanished instantly. Now they're already pushing $20 each. I think it's a little silly given how unlikely a hit TV show is. But on the other hand, this is one instance where I don't think the eventual failure of the development deal will necessarily affect the price. The fan base is passionate and growing. I think real fans will pay these prices, TV show or not.

In all seriousness, I don't think I ever bought multiple copies of any comic now that I think about it. Even at the height of the speculator boom in the early 90's, I remained a simple reader of funny books. I can distinctly remember buying one copy of the black-bagged Death of Superman issue and opening it immediately. Suck on that, speculation!

I've had multiple copies of comics, from buying comics in bulk on eBay or locally.
