I'm buying this book simply on the strength of Sonny Liew's art. I've been a big fan of his work since My Faith in Frankie and Malinky Robot. In my opinion, he's one of the most imaginative artists in the business. I can see how his stuff wouldn't be for everyone, though.

I think as long as we stay away from this... ...things will be OK

I think as long as we stay away from this... ...things will be OK The two Jared Stevens series get a bad rap, in my opinion. Yeah, the look is terrible and some of the art is overmuscled, shoulder-padded sub-Image stuff, but the stories themselves were actually pretty interesting. JF Moore, Steven Grant, Len Kaminski, and Keith Giffen were all injecting their stories with different ideas than your usual Dr Fate stories, and a lot of that material really stood out from the average books of the day. Keith Giffen's Book of Fate, in particular, was attempting something different, mocking superhero conventions even as it played with them, and once he took over the art for the last few issues, it was really something special.

Really good first issue. Best thing I've read from Paul Levitz since he returned to writing, and Sonny Liew's art was everything I hoped it would be.

It's not so much Sonny Liew's art that's off putting for me; it's the premise and another title that, at least from the preview, that Paul Levitz is failing to appeal to my taste.

I used to really enjoy Paul Levitz's writing but in the last 10 years it has varied between decent and awful. I only stuck with Worlds' Finest because it featured the Huntress and Power Girl who are 2 of my favorite characters but overall, the series was pretty blah.

Yeah, I don't know if it's me or what, but his writing has really crashed IMO. Not the same Levitz that electrified the Legion series back in the 80's.

Levitz was much better on the first issue than on the preview. It was his best work since he returned to writing, in my opinion.

I agree that despite the art style, I was a Jared Stevens fan.
Waiting to see more on Fate's, ahem, destiny.

I like the new logo.
The story had parts that I liked, but Khalid doesn't do much for me yet. I'd rate it ok, but I do want to see some more.
I'm not a fan of the art. I would have preferred random Brazilian #6 doing what passes for "standard superhero style" these days.

Personally, I think it was better than the DeMatteis era in every way but the art. The stories were somewhat challenging, the reconception of the order/chaos dichotomy was interesting, and if nothing else, the writers were really trying to expand Stevens beyond your typical '90s badboy. I mean, it was an Archie Goodwin book, and he picked talented writers who were willing to try something different. From the reaction of most fans-- not saying you personally-- I kinda suspect that most people never got past the new look to actually read the book. It has '90s stink over it that it really doesn't deserve beyond the terrible costume design.
Now, it wasn't as good as the William Messner-Loebs/Peter Gross era, I'll give you that.
