May 2006That was the month 52 came out for DC, and probably the begining of the end of my interest in the global events of the DC universe... Yeah this was pretty much the beginning of the end of my interest in modern big 2 comics and led to a 5 year hiatus that began shortly after Civil War concluded.
This is what I did get then...
52 #1-4 Captain America 18 Civil War 1 Conan 28 Conan Book of Thoth 3 Conan: Tower of the Elephant and other Stories Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere 8 Rex Mundi 18 Shadowpact 1 Star Wars Legacy 0 Y: The LAst MAn Paper Dolls tpb

It would turn out to be pretty much the end of my main Marvel universe buying days when Civil War was over.
On the other hand, the Infinite Crisis/ 52/ Countdown era was probably the era where I bought my most DC Comics.

I was never a bigger sucker for the comic industry than in 2006. I was trying to get back into comics and decided to use DC's One Year Later event as a jumping off point, literally pulling EVERY SINGLE DC title until a book turned me off. I dropped several after the first issue and, by this point, had already dropped quite a few, but I was still spending a ludicrous amount of money and yet not really enjoying myself.
52 #1-4 Action Comics #839 All Star Superman #4 Aquaman:Sword of Atlantis #42 Batman #653 Birds of Prey #94 Civil War #1 Crisis Aftermath:The Battle for Bludhaven #3-4 Crisis Aftermath:The Spectre #1 Detective Comics #819 Emissary #1 Green Arrow #62 Green Lantern #12 Negative Burn #1 Nightwing #120 Robin #150 Seven Soldiers of Victory Vol. 3 TPB Shadowpact #1 Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #18

I was pretty excited for this but I thin # 4 was my last issue. I read it collected a couple years back and generally enjoyed it, though.

I liked DC's original idea for the series far more than what it eventually became. Once I realized they weren't going to explain the missing year after all, I lost interest entirely. When they did the One Year Later event, I kept myself out of comic book forums, so I wouldn't be influenced in how much I enjoyed the new era. I did the same thing for the New 52. When I came back, I noticed that I had forgotten about the explaining of the missing year part of 52. I had just enjoyed the story and was a bit blindsided about all the people complaining that they weren't getting the week by week explanation of what happened in the missing year. This led to "52 done right", also known as Countdown. UGH!

Bought back then:
Action Comics #839 Robin #150 Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes #18 Superman #652
By this point, I had pretty much stopped reading Marvel altogether. I was reading more DC. Though I couldn't afford a weekly series at the time, I remember all the hoopla surrounding 52, could they sustain the weekly schedule, would the quality suffer, etc.
Having now read the entire series in TPB, I think it's one of the best efforts under Dido. The writing team of Morrison, Waid, Rucka and Johns was superb.
(And no, to this day I still have not read nor have any interest in Civil War).
