I had a modest pull and the Busiek/Perez Avengers was the thing that kept me in comics at the time when there were a lot of external reasons I thought about dropping my pull. I was also selling off a lot of stuff at this time, getting rid of large chunks of Batman, Superman, Peter David Hulk, etc. etc. etc. though I hadn't quite gotten to the Silver Age sell off, that was coming in a couple of years.
Avengers 5 Captain America 6 Iron Man 5 Jack Kirby's Fourth World #16 Kents #11 Kurt Busiek's Astro City 14 Marvel Universe #1 (Invaders by Stern/Epting) Starman 43 Starman: The Mist 1 Thunderbolts 15

Old man lament: I have a very hard time accepting that as much time elapsed between those comics and today as between them and the 1978 comics of my childhood. It feels completely wrong. (Like realizing that Jean Grey stayed dead longer after the Morrison run than after the Dark Phoenix saga. Whaaaa..?)
April 1998... I lived in Maryland and had access to a great LCS that held lots and lots of indie comics. Those were good days, despite the dross that most super-hero comics presented.
Cerebus #229, with Sim and Gerhardt producing a gorgeous-looking comic. Too bad about the editorial pages, which often angered me. Godzilla #1 by Dark Horse, which I gave to my Godzilla-loving three years old. Great Art Adams art. Hellblazer #126, and I still love Paul Jenkins’ run. Legion of super-heroes #105 Legionnaires #61 : it took me a while to give the rebooted Legion books a shot; I stayed angry for years after seeing the Five Years Later period just being stopped and erased. But even a cranky old fan has to admit that the “Archie Legion” had a charm all its own. Preacher #38. Big Preacher fan.
I didn’t get the Marvel Conan book that month. I was done with the publisher’s mistreatment of the character.

The Nail and its sequel are really well-done stories, but then again, I generally love the Elseworlds line. Leave It to Chance is something I'd like to read at some point.

The NailI bought the paperback book and I've often take it on trips on vacations in the late 90's and early 00's ... and I did read the Power of Shazam too ...
