These are the first modern comics I've read in probably 10 years, but anyway, I was in Walmart waiting for my wife to finish shopping, and I picked up a The Flash 100 Page Giant, and read through most of the lead story (written by Gail Simone). I thought "hey, this is pretty good, and I like the Flash, so maybe I'll check out the newest Flash series". So I started reading the Flash 2016 series. I read the first 3 issues, and I have to say, I think I'm done. While it had its good points, I think the idea of dozens of people running around Central City with the Flash's powers is not at all to my liking, and I have a hunch at least a bunch of them will be keeping those powers for the long haul, so I think I'm done with that series. I also read #1 of the Teen Titans 2016 series and didn't like that much either, so I don't think I'll bother with #1. However, I will check out the rest of that Flash 100 Page Giant and if I like it, look for more of those.

Just yesterday I read the new Star Wars # 1 taking place after Empire Strikes Back. Not bad but the dialogue with the Rebel Alliane and Leia and Lando got boring.
and read 3 issues of Immortal Hulk where I really got bored of having to read through 3 whole issues of some half man half bull character in Roxxon talk jibber jabber nonsense of stock market stuff

I read the two trade of the Venditti/Hitch Hawkman,.. where Venditti actually manages to make sense of Hawkman's story, which is crazy.. it actually works really well.
The big confrontation of the story has that problem where it didn't make any sense that the rest of the Justice League wasn't around for it, but otherwise it's one of the better things I've read from the current DC.

Venditti is an excellent writer, but sometimes it seems like if the book goes on too long (like with his X-O Manowar), he becomes stagnant and directionless. I think his runs on Green Lantern and The Flash also suffered from a similar issue
I think Valiant realized that and that's why none of their books now go over 25 issues

I hadn't really read much from him before..a bit of the Flash run.. but it was not from the beginning, and it was fine, but nothing that jumped out at me. Not sure if the XO I read was his or not.
I have to say, the Hawkman story, if you think back and review it, seems like not a whole lot for 12 issues, but that's partly because of Hitch being on art... he's good, but he is pretty low on panels per page.

I think my favorite thing he's done, besides his earlier portion/pre-Unit Y X-O, was DC You Green Lantern Basically Hal goes rouge and takes with him this prototype construct gauntlet. Was one of the better DC You ideas, next to Jim Gordon Bat Mech

I've been reading some (mostly) current stuff via Hoopla lately. This what I said about it on Goodreads... I liked Crossroad Blue a little better, but I quite like this one too. The art is stylistic and moody. I've also read the first 4 volumes of The Woods (comprising the first 16 issues of the 36 issue series)... the story of an American high school that is mysteriously transported to an alien moon and forced to survive in the alien landscape, and discover the mysteries of why they were taken to such a place. The characters are interesting and draw you in, the mystery is intriguing enough to keep you wanting to find out more. The art is again stylistic, but reads well and does a lot to convey character and mood. Savage Town OGN by Declan Shalvey and Phillip Barrett, a story of the Irish crime mobs as they operate in Limerick City and follows the exploits of Jimmy "Hardy"Savage. I didn't like this one as much as I was hoping to. For me, having the dialogue be all in slang and/or dialect to emulate the Irish accent and speech patterns lent it some authenticity but severely hindered the accessibility and readability of the story. It made it a bt of a chore and a slog to get through. I really like Shalvey's art and visual storytelling, but here he was the writer/scripter, and it was missing is usual knack for visual storytelling. -M

I just reread Injection Volumes 1-3 (comprising issues #1-15) by Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey. I think this is my favorite stuff from Ellis in years. It has a nice blend of cutting edge science/science fiction, folklore, the supernatural and weird history to connect with me on a lot of levels. Like many of Ellis's characters, the five central characters are shits, and in some ways completely unlikable, and yet charming and charismatic enough so you can buy into their exploits. They aren't charming rogues in the Han Solo mold, more like complete bastards who intrigue you like Hagberd Celine, or Ellis' own Spider Jerusalem or Elijah Snow. The basic plot, this group of five geniuses saw the innovation curve of the 21st century flattening as humanity reached the apex of its creativity and decided to do something to extend the curve and keep things interesting, so created the Injection, a fusion of computer code, A.I. and a supernatural entity and entered into cyberspace, and now years later are dealing with the consequences of their creation. Declan Shalvey's art is superb here, a top-notch visual storyteller with a recognizable visual style, and Ellis is at the top of his game here (he can sometimes be hit or miss with me, but hits more often than misses and when he connects like this, it's a doozy of a ride). -M

Had fallen behind on one of the few current titles I was reading, Hawkman, with intense overtime at work for the last 6 months.
Just got caught up and wow ! My favorite title right now.
Venditti is solid. Loved his X-O Manowar and am loving his Hawkman now as well, especially seeing supporting characters Hawkwoman, Atom and Adam Strange, and the new art team of Fernando Pasarin with Oclair Albert and Wade von Grawbadger are killing it !
Especially loving how Hawkman's previous lives keep coming up throughout the DCU past.

Just got caught up on Shazam !
Very disappointed that Dale Eaglesham threw the publishing schedule so far off, hurting this book.
I normally like Scott Kolin's work, but not on this title.
Still hanging in there cause I want to see how this comes out, and I like the Shazam family concept, so we'll see.

I first became aware of the Hard Case Crime novels when the hype over Stephen King writing Joyland for the line was all over the place, and I have checked out a few of them over the years (and am grabbing whatever I can of the line when I find them on the cheap), but I only recently learned that Titan Comics did a line of Hard Case Crime comics related to the book series. Hoopla had a bunch of these available for borrow and I snagged a bunch of them with my extended borrows for March, but am just now getting around to diving in to them. The first one I read was Minky Woodcock: The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini by Cynthia Von Buhler... which inserts a female wannabe private eye into the circumstances of Houdini's death and the souring of his friendship with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and examines the question of whether Houdini's death was the result of foul play. It is a fun, sordid, and entertaining crime comic, hits all the right notes and is superbly illustrated. Well worth checking out if you like crime stories, Houdini, spiritualism, or ectoplasmic discharges (no spoilers, read the comics and get a whole new concept of the hand of glory I did say it was sordid...). -M

Vampblade Volume 1, Issues #1-#12 Uggg, where to begin... Basic gist is that a comic book store employee, after her shop owner boss gets shot down by the russian mafia, takes ahold of twin blades and becomes Vampblade, a 90's bad girl heroine. But after killing them, she notices something coming from the other people who hid with her. These parasites that only she can see and kill that have been infiltrating the world for centuries. They're also incredibly phallic and try to impregnate her It's trashy, sleazy, and is it wrong that I kind of like it?
