I read the first six issues of I Hate Fairyland, as I picked up the TPB for $3 last weekend. It's a kids' cartoon on crack, and it's awesome. Also read the only six issues of World of Wakanda, the TPB of which I borrowed from my local library. I was not the target audience for that book, and I didn't enjoy a single page of it in the least. I wasn't the target audience either, but I really liked World of Wakanda (borrowed from the library as well), and was disappointed it was a single volume with no more forthcoming. To each their own. -M

Avengers No Surrender continues to entertain with some nice twists and character insights. Yes, Hulk is back and yes, he is mad. But it's an immortal rage now driven by a violent intelligence as his actions and decisions come off as very scary here. This is a new Hulk and if this is the direction and theme(s) they are taking with him, then my interest in Ewing's upcoming new Hulk title is quickly growing.

Bonehead #1-#2 Seems like Image has been putting out quite a few Cyberpunk books lately, guess because it's pretty much the world we live in, albeit less romanticized and flashy. Bonehead revolves around Machine 56, a blank slate of a person strapped into a high tech helmet called a "Bonehead". During his numerous endurance tests he happens upon Pumpkin Juice, another in a vast sea of Bonehead users who believes him to be a lost member of "The Kings", the Gramercy Riffs of all of the gangs I'm liking it quite a bit, though I'm a bit perplexed as to why it's being published under Slyvestri's Top Cow label

I just read the Green Lantern Earth One OGN by Corinna Beckham and Gabriel Hardman. some samples of Harmdman's stuff... this is from early in the book... It's a different take on Green Lantern, but I really, really dug this book. Solid storytelling and a story that hooks you and you can invest it with characters you can get behind. It had a little more of a grittier sci-fi feel (I thought of the Expanse in the opening sequences of the book leading up to Jordan discovering the ring and lantern) than the pulpy space opera the GL Corps usually embraces. Hardman is a great visual storyteller. The story is resolved, with a solid beginning, middle and end, but it has enough of an open ended conclusion that more stories with these characters could easily be told, but still a final enough conclusion for the book to stand on its own. I do hope this duo produces more of these. Over the course of this month, I have read all of the Earth One OGN's DC has done (this plus Superman Vol. 1-3, Batman Vol. 1-2, Teen Titans Vol. 1-2, and Wonder Woman Vol. 1). I had read Superman, Batman and TT Vol. 1 before, but had approached them from a different mindset and let my expectations frame my reactions to the books. I had thought they were solid but they were origin stories and origins, to me, are the least interesting stories you can tell with characters. I went in not expecting to like them and they were better than I expected, but I didn't seek out the rest of the volumes at that time. This time I just went in and said let me see what they are doing, starting with Wonder Woman and went from there, and I enjoyed them all a lot more. They ranged from good to very good, but the GL volume was excellent and for me, by far, is the best of the bunch (with Teen Titans, WW, Bats and Supes following in that order). I like the format (though I think the price for the hc is a little steep for what you get, I'd like to see a paperback collection of each series in 3 volume sets follow as they each reach Vol. 3 to keep them in print, accessible and affordable, but that's just my wishful thinking). I read all of them via the library or Hoopla, though I can see myself picking up some of these for my shelves as the opportunity presents itself (definitely GL, probably Titans, maybe the rest). I think each does a decent job of capturing the spirit of the character and telling interesting stories with updated versions of the characters that can stand alone without being tied to a shared universe (though there are nods to the other books in some of the volumes). The writers have remained consistent on all of the books, but the art teams on Superman and Teen Titans switched up. I liked the art on all of them except Superman Vol. 3, which was to me only okay, but still did the job. -M

I just read the Green Lantern Earth One OGN by Corinna Beckham and Gabriel Hardman. I've been excited for that book ever since it was announced, even going so far as to create my own version of the story which is more in line with a 50's b-movie than Ridley Scott's Alien, which is the overall vibe I got as I flipped through it. As much as I like Hal and Emerald Dawn, he's needed an origin revamp like this, even if it isn't cannon

Zero by Ales Kot. James Bond, Bourne show-runners, read and learn... It blows out of the water any Bourne/recent James Bond movie period. Bourne and Bond are truly deadly characters - if you'd spend some time with them, rest assured they would bore you to death..

I read a few of these. What do the colours mean? Red are titles I'm dropping, bold are new additions that didn't convince me and green are those that did (until further notice, that is).

The Adventures of Cthulhu Jr. & Dastardly Dirk #1 by Dirk Manning & Scoot McMahon... just released at C2E2. Dastardly Dirk schemes for a way to become a full member of E.V.I.L. (i.e. Every Villain in Literature) as the stars are aligning for a great evil to come into the world, but never underestimate the power of homemade ranger cookies... a fun all ages romp. My favorite characters so far are The Pumpking (one of the members of E.V.I.L.) and Aloysius (the talking floating skull and assistant to Dastardly Dirk). -M

New Mutants -Dead Souls is an interesting set-up. I kinda like how Illyana is portrayed here while the interaction between Rictor, Rahne, Boom-Boom, and Guido carries acknowledgement of their long friendships and being teammates. The art is rough in spots though. I still don't know where Bendis is going with his final Iron Man arc. I'm considering checking out the new Champions by Zub just to see how well another writer handles Riri. For his final swing, Slott has made Norman Osborn truly terrifying. I don't know what Peter is going to do now. Thor #705 - "Say goodbye". Two simple words made me cry. It's been a long time since any comic got such an emotional response from me. Magnificent.
