Klaus #1Grant Morrison & Dan Mora Minor spoilersKlaus the trapper does his yearly visit to a city to sell furs and meat, only to find that the city has taken a dramatic tyranny turn. The men seem to be enslave in the coal mines, and kids aren't even allowed to play with stones. An armed force enforcing the "no-fun no-leisure" policy throughout town robs Klaus of his stock as all goods within the city belong to the Baron. He is run out of town and almost killed despite being a major hunk, but saved by his companion white wolf. We then get a glimps of the baron's family, a spoiled and hatefull bunch, with the possible exception of the wife that probably will become Klaus' ally/love protagonist. Finally, we get a psychedelic dream from Klaus from which he wakes up with an arm ache & a ton of toys surrounding him. Oh my... That was quite atrocious. The plot and characters are amongst the stupidest I've read in a while, just a series of cliché interupted by some Morrison weirdness for the sake of it, really really bad! Thankfully, the art is pretty good, with an obvious manga influence, but in a realistic american way. The coloring is probably the most successfull aspect of the book though, as the mood is mostly coming from it and is fairly effective at describing winter and yet having strong personnality. That becomes obvious in the dream sequence where those colors spectacularly take life. I have suscribed to it with my LCS, so I guess I'll have to get the remaing 3 issues. Let's hope Morrison planed this for more than Gerty, because I'm also a 35+ years old, but with real life experiences... I've never been a Morrison guy, but is he really just Morrison-ized Rankin-Bass? That's just sad. Especially if he leaves out Heat and Snow Miser...

Heat Miser and Snow Miser are the best thing about Christmas after the CCF 12 Days!

I recently read the latest issues of Saga and Autumlands. I'm considering waiting for an arc to come out before I read the issues given the intentional hiatus' of these creator-owned series. My memory kicks in after a page or two, but I tend to lose the flow. Love both books, though.
Today I read Star Wars #1 & 2 and Darth Vader #1 on Marvel Unlimited. I was thoroughly entertained by both, particularly Darth Vader. Salvador Larroca draws the best Darth Vader I've ever seen in comics. It's amazing how much his style has changed from his days on FF with Chris Claremont.

I also fell for Darth Vader, got the first TPB today, but not a chance to read it yet. I got it mostly though because a lot friends liked it and because Gillen is writing.

All the Star Wars books have been pretty good... Vader is definitely the best of them, but I haven't been disappointed with any so far. Well, Lando was kinda medicore, but not terrible.

Has the through crossed anyone else's mind that Dark Vader's success kinda proves that a Doctor Doom ongoing could work with the right creators?

They had a successful Doom ongoing already, where he, in fact, conquered the United States. The series only died when that made the line-wide decision that 2099 couldn't stand on it's own without sucking the present in. Even with that, it did last 44 issues.

The Goddamned #1 Jason Aaron & R.M. Guéra Minor spoilers Finally reuniting after some years apprt, the creative team of Scalped introduce us to a strange semi pre-historical wasteland of mythological burgeoning civilisations. We follow a stranger who wakes up in a pool of muck, feces and corpses and go on to have a very violent revenge on his tormentors. We then learn the very nature of this extraordinary being, deeply connected to christian mythology. Filled with constant anger and cluelessness as of his fate, he wanders this world as we are introduced to a Mad Max like caravan of gruesome fighters with their slaves, all led by Noah, yes, the Noah. To be continued.
Not much happened yet as this was all about exposition of the characters, yet, the action was very well crafted, nothing was boringso far, the art was quite amazing with some nice colors, mostly (the coloring technique on the "hero"s hair was quite ugly...). It really felt a lot like the latest Mad Max in the colors, mostly orange, brown, yellow, ocre, grey, crimson, and black of course... The hints on the plot may indicate a major metaphysical epic, but it's too soon to say, it might turn out to be as most of Aaron's work a mood piece with violence. Very Heavy Metal so far, very 70ies. I'm onboard.

I consider just about everything published by Marvel post 1991 to be an "alternate reality" of the original make-believe universe.

I consider everything published by MArvel after 1961 to be an alternate to the original make believe universe where Cap, Subby and Torch were active post-war not frozen in ice, wandering the Bowery as an amnesiac or forgotten and replaced by a bratty teen-ager. -M

Borrowed the first two Hawkeye by Fraction/Aja TPB's from the local library over the weekend and read them both last night. The only questions I have are: How the hell did I miss this book when it was out originally, and how soon can I get out and get copies of my own for my collection?
