Hope #1 by Dirk Manning and K. Lynn Smith... This is the new super-hero comic from Dirk Manning (Nightmare World, Tales of Mr. Rhee) and K. Lynn Smith (Plume). It's self published, so far. I picked it up at Gem City today, and just finished reading it. Simply, I love this book. Smith's art is clean and stylistic, but her layouts and page designs are excellent and propel the narrative along, her style is reminiscent of say Mike Oeming in Powers, but distinctly her own. Dirk has a unique voice and always finds a human perspective to tell his stories from and it works here amazingly well. I don't want to spoil too much, by the story revolves around a superheroine (called ultras here) who is a wife and a mother, but has kept her identity a secret so far and what happens when a crisis (no not the DC kind) outs her identity to the world and the repercussions of her dual life take an unexpected turn (one that is often overlooked in all the what if super-powered heroes existed in the real world projects out there). It's a first issue, there's a lot of set up (which given both Dirk and K. Lynn's track record will all pay off at some point in the story) but the characters and story grab you and leave you wanting more. Not sure when issue #2 will hit (this just debuted last month and like many self-published books there is not a set schedule), but I'll be there when #2 hits. If you run across Dirk or K. Lynne at any shows this year, I highly recommend checking it out, and I know both would work out some kind of mail order if you are not a show attending sort or won't see them at any shows. I know Dirk is doing C2E2 in a couple of weeks and his full con schedule is up on his website. -M PS here's the Bleeding Cool article previewing Hope (and outlining some other stuff Dirk has in the works for 2018). Source Point Press has just announced that this book-Hope #1 will be their 2019 FCBD release. It will be a revised edition of #1 and the only official release of #1. #2 will follow 2 months later and the rest of the series will follow all published by Source Point Press, who picked up the book after reading the self-published debut issue. I highly recommend folks look for this on FCBD, it is quite simply, the best super-hero comic I read in 2018. -M

The Batman Giant has a new Batman lead, reprints the Hush storyline from Batman and the new52 Nightwing and Harley Quinn titles.
The Superman Giant has a new Superman lead, reprints the Batman/Superman book form the early 2000s, reprints the early 2000s Geoff Johns GreenLantern title and The Terrifics from the New Age of DC Heroes.
I have been also been catching up with the new Sandman Universe titles, having read the Sandman Universe Special and issues 1-3 of The Dreaming and House of Whispers. I still have Lucifer and Books of Magic to catch up on. I am really digging the 2 titles I have read so far.

They look really good. Need to thumb through Lucifer and Books of Magic to see if I want them or not.

Not exactly modern, not exactly classic but here is one great manga:
The 1st volume is nearly perfect, I guess that was the original story arc/pitch. Then when Tenma becomes an 'outlaw' there are several side-stories about his life in exile, can be slightly boring. When the arc with detective and his therapist starts it gets back on track.

Read the newest issue of Deadpool last night, I’m a sucker for Christmas comics. I haven’t read much Deadpool over the years, but it seems like they’re writing him in Ryan Reynold’s voice. The art and story were fine, but darn if $4 isn’t a lot to pay for 3 minutes of entertainment. Maybe it took 4 or 5 minutes, and I know some mainstream books are even shorter, but wow, it was over so fast. I never pay more than $2 for a comic, and usually less than a dollar, but this was not a good value for the money.

Here is one police-procedural or rather police-non-procedural. In a sentence - it's a masked-vigilante story done right.
Red Team There is tremendous amount of movies and comic books about virtue-signaling avengers running around in colorful spandex and self-righteous delirium, and some of it is good fiction, but most of it is extremely unrealistic and cheesy. This is more in tradition of Wire and Training Day. Garth Ennis covered this topic in his Marvel Knights Punisher run (in humorous way), here is realistic take on it. Good stuff.

Red Team is set in the US, is that right? I like Ennis but I'd be more interested if it wasn't yet another story about American cops. That might seem like a superficial objection, but sometimes I just feel overwhelmed with the sheer volume of American media that's thrown our way, whether we live in the US or not. I suppose realistically, this is aimed at the US market, which means it pretty much has to have a US setting to gain the largest possible audience. I might read it anyway one of these days if I hear that it's especially good, but at first glance I have the feeling I can probably do without this one for now.

Excellent tactical/action/survival series, from start to finish 24 issues straight. Michael Alan Nelson knocked it out of the park, and so did most of the artists.
The hyper-production is giving a bad name to 'action/tactical' comics and movies, this one is an exception. I would recommend to the fans of Walking Dead and movies such as Fury Road, The Omega Man and of course 28 Days Later.

I found Red Team to be rather luckuster. I was looking forward to it based on solicitations but bailed after 2 issues as I found the characters mostly unlikable if they were developed at all, and the plot somewhat painy by numbers. I like Ennis doing war stuff, so I was hoping this would be akin to his stuff I liked, It wasn't for me.

Just finished reading Curt Pires and Antonio Fuso's Wyrd by Dark Horse and it was a lot of fun. It's sort of like a realistic look at what would happen if the US really had made Captain America and the modern day fall out.

Just read Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe... ...in Serbian. This is something I probably wouldn't have read if I hadn't received a free copy from Talajic recently. (Not really into Deadpool - enjoyed the movies well enough as silly, albeit extremely violent, comedies, but have little interest in reading any of his comics.) And mostly my thoughts are - meh. Basically, it was a single issue's worth of story stretched out over four issues, and Bunn apparently couldn't decide whether it should be black humor or a completely dark exploration of an indestructible psychopath killing other super-powered beings, so he tried for both and ended up with neither. I liked the art, though. And the Serbian translation was amusing at places.

Finally gave in to all the hype and checked out Immortal Hulk. The first volume is on CU now. Seemed like an original spin on the origin/basics of the character, and I’ll be back for more.
