We had a great thread on the old board that I neglected to save where we threw out recommendations for great classic horror films. Specifically though, I'm looking for horror films to check out from 1947 to 1961 because I'm considering (not promising) bringing back my classic horror film countdown and expanding the original 50 from the first 50 years of horror to 65 from the first 65 years of horror (1896 to 1961).
I have quite a few that I've seen, and many more that I plan to consult, but what would you recommend?

I'm becoming a sucker for european B&Ws from this period (or a little later). Check out I Vampiri, Atom Age Vampire, and The Awful Dr. Orloff.

Looks like a pretty comprehensive list so far, but IMHO Caltiki -- The Immortal Monster is conspicuous in its absence. It's an Italian production from 1959 & fits nicely with MDG's reference above.
Otherwise, I'll need to check some of my reference works from home, though offhand I can also add, in the sf-horror category (where Caltiki belongs as well, for that matter)
Creature with the Atom Brain It! The Terror from Beyond Space The Unearthly The Indestructible Man Attack of the Crab Monsters The Alligator People The Creeping Unkown

Just out of curiosity, Marty, have you ever seen Il Demonio (Italy, 1963)? I watched it on DVD-R about two years ago. Quite good, with a segment prefiguring the famous Exorcist extended-version spider-walk scene by a good decade.

No--it's on YouTube, but in Italian. I may try it out anyway. Thanks for the tip.

The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas from 1957 starring Peter Cushing. Really cool spooky movie that almost feels like a precursor to Jaws.

Upon further review, other surprising omissions (unless I'm going blind) from the above listings --
Them! (1954) Psycho (1960) Peeping Tom (1960) Blood & Roses (1960) Horror Hotel (City of the Dead) (1960) The Innocents (1961) Burn, Witch, Burn (Night of the Eagles) (1961 ... IMDb says 1962, but the reference I consulted before work this morning says '60, presumably in relation to the UK release date; the book in question is British, as is the film)
Also definitely worth watching --
Cult of the Cobra (1955) The Undead (1957) I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957) I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957) The Man Who Turned to Stone (1957) The H-Man (1958) Curse of the Faceless Man (1958) Space Master X-7 (1958) The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake (1959) The Head (1959) Terror is a Man (1959) Mill of the Stone Women (1960) Tormented (1960) The House in Marsh Road (1960) Doctor Blood's Coffin (1961) The Snake Woman (1961) The Devil's Hand (1961) Curse of the Doll People (1961) The Mask (1961) Night Tide (1961)

'57 to '63 or so is really the sweet spot for me, as far as cheap horror movies go. Horror Hotel (City of the Dead) (1960) The guy who directed Horror Hotel also directed The Night Stalker--two conspicuous highlights of a busy but bland TV movie output (including the hilarious Smash-Up on Interstate 5) I was never able to enjoy this one. Didn't click with me at all. Proof that it ain't all gold. Just re-watched this the other night. A few years ago, on eBay, I picked up a dozen or so of the original Mask 3-d viewers.

'57 to '63 or so is really the sweet spot for me, as far as cheap horror movies go. Same here, pretty much. I suspect that's largely attributable, at least in my case, to that era having generated so much of the stuff that scarred me as a kid when I caught it on TV a few years later.

How I skipped over Psycho on my list is beyond me. However there's a bunch of movies I would consider as SF instead of horror. Especially when its radiation that causes a monstrous effect. For instance, from some mentioned previously, The Thing From Another World,Invasion Of The Body Snatchers,Gojira and Them are SF rather than horror. Are we to use the most liberal definition of horror? If something looks different than human, whether an alien, radioactively created,a result of scientific experiments, all horror. The distinction is important to define when you enter the 1950s
