well if you want a crowd it dont get bigger than this Ya know, one thing I absolutely don't miss are the days when Alex Ross art reigned supreme in comicdom. The man did painstakingly detailed work, but I just never ever liked it.

Absolute edition I believe. feels odd to get such a negative reaction from what I see as a great cover. I still see Ross as being worthy of awe, though in small doses.

No negativity here, just curious. Plus my entry this week was an Alex Ross cover from the regular Kingdom Come series, so obviously I'm ok with it. His work is awesome, but I think a lot of people got burnt out on his style because it was absolutely everywhere for a while.

Fortunately, as long as Astro City comes out, I'm guaranteed one cover a month.

I think it's a combination of that and, to me anyway, hyperrealistic, tonal styles don't work well in comics, especially where there is a lot of movement and action. I think Ross's style worked very well in Marvels since it was a slower paced, "ground-level" story, with only glimpses of super-heroing. Here, it just looks like models wearing costumes.

Alex Ross is only comic book star I've ever met in person. And I almost missed at that. It was in 97 in a conference center of a hotel when I lived in St. Louis. Before the internet and all, really Wizards pictures of writers/artists at the time was the only references I had. I was on my way out when I happened to look at his name on the table. There were no Marvels issues in the whole convention. So I had him sign Marvel Age 130 that sneak peeked Marvels. Marvels #1 was my favorite of those covers but couldn't get one. According to the owner of the comic shop I went to his appearance was last minute and he said within hours any dealer that had anything Alex Ross got bought up real quick. That's my only comic book celebrity story.
Though I have met Joe Eisma two times and even had dinner and drinks with his wife and mine after a convention. But I see that more casual since I knew him from Bendis' board long before he blew up with Morning Glories. That was back in 09 and 10 I believe.

Back then, buying it off the shelf ( whereas Marvels had come out just before I was buying) I wished Alex Ross had done Ruins. I don't Nielsen's art was bad, I would have just been interested to see Ross illustrate the ying book to his yang, Marvels.

Nick Cardy would have words with you. As would Joe Kubert and Carmine Infantino. and Jack Burnley and Fred Ray and Brain Bolland and J.H. Williams III and etc. and all those words STILL won't change my choice

I didn't post it because I thought it was too obvious, but is no one going to go with Fantastic Four #48?? I thought a couple of the Perez covers from Crisis would show up, too... If someone had beaten me to my first choice (and it sounds like I only got to it first because Hoosier X forgot where it was from), I probably would have gone with Crisis #7 as my second choice.

No negativity; just an inability to appreciate the work, especially when it's being used in place of Perez work in that instance. If Ross were just another artist doing his thing, I wouldn't mind him at all. It's the over-saturation of his work in the previous decade that I don't miss. Ross was EVERYWHERE, but his art style is, perhaps, too unique to be applied everywhere and for all comic works. I think a comparable artist style would be that of J.H. Williams III. Now I LOVE Williams, but his style is also very specific and doesn't really apply well when slapped onto any old book in an effort to drum up sales. A book has to have the right tone in order for his work to make sense on it.

Yes, there was an oversaturation of Ross' work in the 90's-2000's. I also got tired of seeing all his figures look full bodied and thick. He is amazing in small doses.
