Background To Danger (1943) George Raft,Sidney Greenstreet,Peter Lorre,Brenda Marshall,Turhan Bey D-Raoul Walsh
Ankara in neutral Turkey : World War Two. A town of intrigue and of provocateurs. The Germans are planning to leak maps apparently proving that the Russians are about to invade the country. American Joe Barton (Raft) is in the know and in the middle, along with Zaloshoff (Lorre) and his sister (Marshall) who may or may not be Russians. What is clear though is that odious Colonel Robinson (Greenstreet) is a full-blown Nazi.
Raft is no Bogart and Marshall is no Bergman. A decent Casablanca type story with no romantic angle or smart dialogue. A decent programmer. But Greenstreet and Lorre are always a marvel to watch 6 and 1/2 stars

But some of them are kind of lame otherwise and I kinda get them mixed up. I remember one about a lottery ticket ...
I don't think I've seen this one. The title is familiar, but I think every other movie had "Danger" in the title in the early 1940s.

Two-Way Stretch (1960) Peter Sellers,Wilfred-Hyde White,Lionel Jeffries,David Lodge,Bernard Cribbins D-Robert Day
Peter Sellers and his mates are having it easy as they serve their 3 year sentence in prison, similar to the prisoners in Hogun's Heroes. That is until Officer "Saur" Crout (Jeffries) arrives to crack down on the coddling. Meanwhile Seller's old boss (White),as a plan to temporarily break them out of jail to pull a spectacular crime.
I thought Lionel Jeffries steals the show as the hard-ass officer in this amiable comedy.Sellers is a bit subdued. As mentioned, its a hybrid of Hogun's Heroes and a caper film. 7 of 10 stars

Genesis II (1973) Alex Cord,Mariette Hartley,Ted Cassidy D-John Llewellyn Moxey
TV pilot by Gene Roddenberry of a man,Dylan Hunt (Cord) waking from suspended animation 150 years into the post-apocalyptic future where the peaceful citizens of Pax struggle against the militaristic mutant Tyranians. Both need Hunt for his knowledge of the ancient ways that have been lost
This sucked so bad. Alex Cord, journeyman TV actor is a joke of a leading man.I think his biggest claim to fame was Airwolf which I've never seen and most likely never will.No originality to be found here. It ssems the only way we know the Tyranians are mutants is that they have 2 belly buttons.Seriously.Cheaply made.Only Ted "Lurch" Cassidy is worth watching. The Tyranians have a stick that causes pain when it touches you. Wouldn't a gun be more effective? Everyone wears togas.Cheesy dumbed down story and acting.I can't believe this is from the guy who created the original Star Trek. Finally the networks were right in deciding not to pick this turd up 2 of 10 stars

In the past few days I've watched Rocky and Rocky II, both first time viewings. I envied them both and plan to watch the remaining three. I have no understanding of the appeal of boxing. It's silly to beat the crap out of someone for 45 minutes. But I'm glad that there's a lot more to these movies so far than just the boxing aspect. Plus Berguss Meredith is always good on his roles. Though for being the heavy weight champion Carl Weathers wasn't near as buff in this as he was in Predator.

Now there's an interesting image - Hogun the Grim sitting in Stalag 13 with Sgt. Schultz and Col. Klink. I saw Peter Lorre recently in a film with Bob Cummings - The Chase. Interesting noir. The character name "Dylan Hunt" showed up again in another Roddenberry project - Andromeda.

Speaking of Peter Lorre, I saw parts of Beat the Devil not too long ago. I've seen it so many times, maybe close to 20 times over the years, so I don't need to see the whole thing anymore. You can turn it on anywhere during the movie and watch for ten or twenty minutes and laugh your butt off and then go on about your day.
I saw the part where Major Ross was in the bar going on about Hitler and Mussolini's good points and challenging the other British guy to a fight.

The character name "Dylan Hunt" showed up again in another Roddenberry project - Andromeda. Roddenberry tried again w/the Genesis II concept with Planet Earth. John Saxon took over the Dylan Hunt character. And yes, Andromeda was a (seriously re-worked) third try, after Roddenberry's death. Hunt was still a man trying to rebuild his civilization centuries after his own time; everything else was changed.

Andromeda had a couple good seasons there.

Pinocchio (1940) Voices of Dickie Jones,Christian Rub,Cliff Edwards D-Norman Furgeson,T.Hee
A living puppet, with the help of a cricket as his conscience, must prove himself worthy to become a real boy.
I haven't seen this film since I was a child and was surprised to find:
The iconic nose growing was one short scene only The guilty are not punished nor their operations halted-The aduction of children to Paradise Island to be transformed to jackasses and shipped away for money-besides Pinocchio escaping, these exploiters of children were allowed to continue their operation. They were never punished .For that matter,J.Worthington Foulfellow and Stromboli who both kidnapped Pinocchio were never punished for their misdeeds as well Monstro The Giant Whale-is that the same whale Submariner called forth in FF#4 to crush Manhattan?
What I learned:
Voice actor Christian Rub went on rants about the greatness of Hitler during the dubbing In the novel, Pinocchio killed Jimimy Cricket with a mallet
Anyhoo,just a great great movie.9 stars of 10

I liked him in the original Scarface, and was that him in They Drive by Night, where he and Bogart play brothers. I think Ida Lupino from High Sierra was in that one too.

Raft turned down both The Maltese Falcon and High Sierra. He was pivotal in making Bogart a star.

Correct 3 out of 3.Raft turned the movie down because he didn't think it was"important" While it turned out wrong it wasn't necessarily a foregone conclusion that it was wrong. Falcon was a remake and John Huston had never directed before. Both were danger signs. Raft went with a picture directed by Raoul Walsh instead which was a safer bet.
