That's far more tolerable than Mystery Science Theater. I've watched Elvira hosted movies before and have no problem with witty intermissions. The concept of Mystery Science Theater is probably so damned annoying because Netflix has a lot of them on instant streaming, and it's the movies themselves I would like to watch not those clown's commentary. Edit: But they don't have the movies alone by themselves on instant, and many times not even on DVD. Many of the movies they've done are pretty available for streaming, since a lot are in the public domain. I think the only movie that they've done where I could now sit through the "regular" version is Danger: Diabolik! (which is a masterpiece).

I guess I need to do more investigating them before I complain. I hadn't any idea there was other avenues to find these movies. I can look on youtube and see if I can find some of them. Thanks for the information. Edit: And Danger: Diabolik is on youtube. I've enjoyed most of the Mario Bava movies I've seen.

The vast majority of the MST3k movies were absolute shit and unviewable without the commentary. Are you really looking to watch "Starfighters" or "Fugitive Alien II" unmolested? Why?

McClintock is great if you want to understand many modern US Republicans. Wayne's character is how the patriarchy sees itself - honest, fair, gruff but kind, and filthy rich because of his own hard work. It's close to a Randian point of view, with a good dose of sexism added (unhappy women are cured by the man taking charge and putting her in her place). It's a fantasy world, but many people believe in it - including, unfortunately, my mother. She loves this movie. A lot of people who should know better like McClintock! Your political spin sounds entirely plausible.
I wonder if the IMDB message boards for McClintock! look like those for The Green Berets, where everybody who doesn't like it gets called an America-hater and a communist and blah blah blah. (It reminds of all the right-wingers who were mad that the 2010 version of True Grit got so much critical acclaim. It wasn't because people liked it better. It was because all the Hollywood liberals conspired to praise it at the expense of the John Wayne version. (Which liberal Hollywood despised so much that John Wayne only got an Oscar for it.))
And I remembered to add the exclamation point to McClintock! The original title has the exclamation point. I have no idea why.

And the girl reporter, what's her name, Kitty O'Day? I saw one of those and I could hardly believe my eyes!
I've seen a couple of the Falcon movies and those are pretty good. I don't think I've ever seen Boston Blackie. I assume they are great.
Be on the lookout for the Mr. Wong movies with Boris Karloff. There's a cop (played by Grant Withers) and a girl reporter (played by Marjorie Reynolds, I think the character is Bobbi London) for supporting players, and the result is some goofy but fun low-budget crime-detectin' madness.

My Fave by John is Rio Bravo Ever see El Dorado? In many ways, it's nearly the same movie, with Robert Mitchum instead of Dean Martin, and James Caan instead of Ricky Nelson. One of these days I'm going to watch them as a double feature.

As to McClintock!, people may be over thinking it. It's a funny movie. No, it shouldn't taken as instructional as to the proper treatment of women, since spanking or any form of physical abuse is not ok. But like other old movies that have elements of racism in them (including McClintock! with the portrayal of their Chinese cook), sometimes you have to filter out things that were a product of their times. The abrupt turnaround of Maureen O'Hara to a meek housewife after a spanking was particularly unbelievable and inappropriate. But I live in a household that is all female (even the two cats) and all of them responded with disbelief when I told them that people objected to this movie due to the treatment of women in it. All three of them (not the cats, they expressed no opinion) felt it was just a comedy and get over it. There was far more funny in the movie than troubling. Plus Maureen O'Hara got in on the abusing of the opposite sex as well (particularly with her hatpin).

Watched a John Wayne film I have not seen in decades. 1961's Hatari with Red Buttons. A big 150 minute African safari adventure. Very enjoyable and the weird thing is....THERE"S NO VILLIANS. Even the animals are not portrayed as "bad guys"

I watched Terminator 2: Judgement Day last night. I love classic Arnold Schwarzenegger movies like Total Recall and Predator so this was a blast for me. James Cameron was such a great action director back in the day that it baffles that his most acclaimed movie was a romance.

According to Wiki there were just two Kitty O'Day movies, and in both she was an aspiring detective. I think I saw one of the two, but don't remember much about it-- what about it was unbelievable? I would guess that the girl reporter series you're thinking of was "Torchy Blane," which began in 1937, had nine entries in the series, and may have had a little influence on Lois Lane. An actress named "Lola Lane" played Torchy in 1938, but that in itself was probably no influence, since Siegel and Shuster had probably named Lois by that time. Of the series mentioned, I like the Falcon entries best, but mainly the ones with Tom Conway. I didn't care for George Sanders in the role, though he originated it, and when he tired of it and wanted out, the producers killed off the old Falcon and instituted his brother in his place-- which wasn't a stretch, since Conway was Sanders' real brother.
