I taped G-Men on the DVR but I haven't watched it yet. I figured, "It's called "G-Men," it's got James Cagney, it's from 1935. The chances of it being pretty good are pretty good." It is a great little movie! Cagney is always worth watching. Yup, no such thing as a bad Cagney movie

I decided to record Little Women (1949) when I saw the list of actresses playing the little women - June Allyson, Margaret O'Brien, Janet Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor.
That's quite an ensemble!
I'm still trying to wrap my ahead around the idea that Janet Leigh was making movies in 1949!

Watched another John Wayne movie, 1963's Donovan's Reef. Huge disappointment. The last pairing between Wayne and director John Ford. Many classics produced by this pair, this is not one of them. Taking place on a tropical island, I believe the cast and crew were only interested in soaking up the sun and frolicing on the beach while getting paid. No real plot or obstacles to be met. A waste of Lee Marvin's talents as well. More focused on 3 young children than anything else. Well, the technicolor tropics are nice to view. Wayne is flummoxed by a woman once again but in the grand finale he gives her a spanking and she gives him a kiss. Good grief I'm pretty sure I saw this on tv as a kid, though I remember almost no details. Was there a line where John Wayne asks the French girl how you say parachute in French, and she says, "Parachute"? That might be from some other movie altogether. Were Lee Marvin and John Wayne sort of antagonists a bit?

And yes, Wayne and Marvin were friendly antagonists. They exchanged several blows at the beginning of the film and they were part of a barroom brawl at the end. Otherwise Lee Marvin was nowhere to be found during much of the movie. It was a paid vacation for him

Also, I saw "Imitation of Life" (the version with Lana Turner, Susan Kohner and Sandra Dee) a few days ago and WOW! It's not really my kind of movie by a longshot but it was amazingly well-done on just about every level. I cried at the end. (A little.) I can see why it was such a huge hit in 1959. Oh, I forgot to mention that I saw this on TCM a few weeks ago too. Good acting; great Mahalia Jackson solo.

I really knew better but 1965's I'll Take Sweden starring Bob Hope was next up on my stack of to-be-watched DVDs. These later Hope movies just get worse and worse as the years go by. This one ,it seemed, he was on nebutal during the filming because he acted so laconic. Or maybe thats how he phones it in
On the plus side, it co-stars Tuesday Weld. But thats offset by the presence of Frankie Avalon. Its one of those early/mid sixties sex comedy films where everyone finds ways to avoid having sex or rationally discussing it. We learn how liberated Sweden is because pre-marital sex is accepted. But Big Poppa Hope will come up with all these schemes to prevent his daughter Tuesday from participating. Your also guarenteed to retch when Frankie Avalon grabs a guitar to sing a "rock n roll" song
Yes, I'll Take Sweden. You should take a pass

You should take a pass I watched "Boy Did I Get a Wrong Number!" a while back, with Bob Hope and Elke Sommer, and man it was bad! It wasn't too hard to watch because of Elke Sommer in various states of undress most of the time. (And some of Elke's early scenes (without Bob Hope) are genuinely funny.)
There's a final chase scene that is just one of the worst segments I've ever seen in a movie.
Phyllis Diller is in this movie. Her materiel is so bad, I wondered if it was supposed to be that bad as part of an elaborate joke that went terribly wrong.

Love Elke Sommer. To see her in a good comedy, there's always A Shot in the Dark, the 2nd of the Pink Panther series. How on earth can you make a Hollywood comedy in 1965, set in Sweden, that doesn't have Anita Ekberg or Ursula Andress!

Wayne is flummoxed by a woman once again but in the grand finale he gives her a spanking and she gives him a kiss. Good grief They probably were. Ford and Wayne were very good friends and spent a ton of time together on Ford's yacht. The movie was probably an excuse for an extended paid vacation in Hawaii. It's clearly not a great movie. But it's fun. Ford and Wayne had made Ford's last great film the year before with The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Ford was at the end of his run. He would only complete two more films (he fell ill and was replaced as director of a third, Young Cassidy). There wasn't much left in the tank.

Such a glutton for punishment but here I am back again after watching another Bob Hope movie, this time 1959's Alias Jesse James. This one, with Rhonda Fleming, is a halfway decent time-waster. Except the final shoot out scene. An absolute classic for western fans. Its Bob Hope alone against the Jesse James gang but Bob gets timely help from a cavalcade of TV and movie western stars . See how many you can name from the embedded clip

Svengoolie is showing The Leech Woman (1960) tonight. Haven't seen it yet but last week he showed Weird Woman (1944) with Lon Chaney Jr and I enjoyed that.
Earlier this week I watch both The Corpse Vanishes (1942) and Bowery at Midnight (1942) with Bela Lugosi on TCM On Demand. They were decent efforts but honestly can't say I was too impressed with either film.

Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992) Doug Bradley gives a superb performance and I love the idea of exploring Pinhead's humanity (that was introduced in the previous film). Unfortunately this movie doesn't have much else going for it. This sequel is arguably one of the weakest of the series and it veers heavily from what made the previous two films unique and disturbing. Instead it embraces the more campy aspects of the genre and sadly resorts to a heavy use of cheesy one-liners. The special effects makeups and gore for the most part are exceptional however the designs of the Cenobites are very disappointing. I really like the hospital emergency room scene where the guy is ripped apart by chains. I also liked the design of the pillar and the scene where chains shoot out of it and rip off Sandy's skin was a pretty cool visual.
