It's possible he was doing local television stuff. The kind of ties right in to the advertising copy. Good point. I wonder what local TV was like in New York in 1960? And what advertising would Stan be doing, other than stuff in Goodman's magazines? I know he wrote the Willie Lumpkin newspaper strip. But that was for a Publishers Syndicate, "a relatively small outfit" and "1960 was the only year the syndicate advertised it to potential buyers" [ source]. While some newspapers ran it, it seemed to say more about Stan's fear that Timely was going bust than about any demand for Stan's talents. How likely is it that Stan was, shall we say, putting a positive spin on his past? (Such as when he claimed to have won a Herald Tribune writing competition three times?)

In Origins of Marvel Comics, Stan Lee refers to what television material is this? Any ideas? Did Stan write anything for TV in early 1961 or before? Or is he referring to scripts he wrote but nobody bought? Maybe the 1960s Marvel Super-Heroes cartoon series?

Check the indicia first... I might also suggest posting pics here, or maybe the CGC forums.

Hi I think I found a superman #1 1939 how do I tell of its real I'd begin by checking the indica (as wildfire2099 suggested). In case you're not familiar with the term, it's the small print just below the first page that tells you the year it was printed, the publisher, and all that good stuff. I would then check its contents against this. If it's missing any of the listed content, then you likely have a reprint. If the indica states a publishing year of 1939, and if all the contents match with the link I provided, all that's left is to prove this isn't some forgery. For that, you would likely need to provide photos as well as measurements of the exact length and width of the book. Good luck! Please keep us posted on how it turns out.

Personally I'd say very likely. Stan is a past master of self-aggrandizement and rewriting the past to cast himself in a favourable light.

I've never seen Superman #1 but I've seen a few comics from the 40s and the indica was at the bottom of the inside front cover, not on the first page.

Pat Duggan, formerly Stripsey. The partner of the original Star-Spangled Kid, he is Cortney (Stargirl) Whitmore's stepfather and adopted the armoured identity of S.T.R.I.P.E. to accompany her when she first adopted the Star-Spangled Kid identity.

There's no mention in Wikipedia of Stan doing any TV writing (or IMDB listing) before the Marvel cartoons on '66.

Any help with these three guys. I know I recognize the big guy in the back but can't think of his name. The other two I don't know. Only the dude with the sword had a speaking role to end up in the credits as Vance? It's at least the only character's name in the credits I didn't recognize: imgur.com/a/GQLl5
