Apparently the artist wasn't trying to outright swipe Fuseli's "The Nightmare," but to homage it-- otherwise he probably could've left out the dinosaur in the window, which I feel detracts from the effect here. The dinosaur was actually his daughter's pet and appears on a few other covers so it makes sense with that context.
