As a child I thought that Green Lantern Hal Jordan was THE coolest character in existence. I wanted to BE Green Lantern. When I joined the Hall of Justice I thought it would be fun to fulfill my childhood wishes by using Green Lantern as my username.
As an adult who still loves comics I respect the character and attitude of Flash Jay Garrick. So, when I joined the Classic Comics Forum I thought it was time to "grow up a little" and let my new user name reflect what I appreciate in a comics character now that I am quite a bit older.

I'm a trombone player and I picked it up after 15 years to
Play for the Lord Jesus Christ at international Christian Center church . There was a time that I wanted to change it to gn6196 but the CBR didn't let me so icctrombone is my handle forever more.

Foxley has a slightly convoluted history.
Many years ago, I was playing in a Changeling: The Dreaming LARP, where I was playing a fox pooka with Robin Hood fixation (and, yes, the Disney reference was intentional). The character went by the name of 'Loxley'. The character had an intense rivalry with an unseelie sidhe, who took to contemptuously referring to my character as 'Foxley'. The nickname got picked by other characters, and the character (and myself) ended up liking the sound of it.
Fast-forward a few years, and I'm signing up for various sites that require a user ID. Often combos on my actual name will be taken, so I cast around for something unusual but easily remembered so I can use the same ID on multiple sites. In a flash, the name 'foxley' comes back to me. Sure enough, 'foxley' is almost always available (the only place I have been unable to get it was gmail).

My name was originally sparked by an old thread on CBR when I first started reading it (2004 or 2005, I think) which was titled "are you such a Marvel Zombie that you wouldn't even read DC", or something like that. Fired up to post my words of wisdom, I (eventually) registered as "Simon Garth", who was published by Marvel and is a.... well, you get the picture. Ironically, by the time my registration finally succeeded, the thread had died, which was kind of appropriate.

On other sites, as well as CBR before the Crisis, I was Jolly Mon, which is a Jimmy Buffett song that I really like. In time, I grew uncomfortable with using an alias because it felt dishonest to be giving my opinions with the benefit of anonymity. (No judgements to others, it's just how I felt) As Mr. Bishop said, I don't post anything that I would be ashamed if anyone in real life read, so no worries there. Post-Crisis, I switched to my first & middle initials and my last name. I'm far, far from famous, so it's unlikely that anyone from the real world would bother Googling me and find me here, and if they did it's unlikely they'll search using my initials. And even if they did, it's no secret I'm a comics geek.

It's so awesome-sounding that I assumed you manufactured it -- maybe some combination of Richard Grayson and the android from Aliens or something That's funny, because I've always thought my name is about as far from "awesome-sounding" as one could get; it's a perfectly acceptable male name, but hardly one of distinction, although it has served me well lo these many years. If I were going to manufacture a name or use an alias, it would have to be something ultra-dynamic such as "Dash Riprock" or something that reflected my interests such as "Captain Rogers", "Captain Reynolds", or just simply "The Doctor". On a somewhat related note, if my wife and I had been blessed with a son, his name would have been "Lucas Xavier Bishop", obviously after the time-traveling X-Man and his beloved professor. |

Back in 2011 when I was job hunting after a lay off I was using the internet a lot to post resumes, search want ads, and research tips on successful ways to use the internet in job hunting.
In that time I found a lot of research and articles about the impact that one's internet activity is traced and considered by potential employers. In some instances like prejudging people based on skin color in face to face interviews, a person posting their religious and social convictions, even if not rude or controversial, can affect an employers consideration of you before you even get to the interview stage. The internet is like calling former employers and co-workers 20-30 years ago to get a feel for the kind of person you are. That kind of reaffirmed my need for anonimity and abandoning Facebook.

In that time I found a lot of research and articles about the impact that one's internet activity is traced and considered by potential employers. I got my first job because of my internet activity. A library was impressed with my html skills in constructing an earlier website unrelated to comics. If my employers knew about my internet activity today, I think that would similarly work in my favor. Sure, my passions are dorky, but I like to think I'm well-written, thoughtful, scholarly, and (usually) diplomatic in my posts, whether here or on facebook. I also have a twitter account used JUST for education-related material. Some people use the anonymity of the internet as an excuse to be their worst possible selves. I've always seen the internet as an opportunity to be the best possible version of myself (though I don't always succeed at that ) |

My username is taken from Antwaan Randle El, a former NFL wide receiver. He played for the Washington Redskins a number of years ago, and was a bit unusual in that he was a wide receiver in the NFL, but played quarterback in his college days. As a result of this, he was sometimes used in trick plays where he would pass the ball. After one particularly nice play that he made, I made a comment to my buddies that it was because of his Kryptonian abilities... since, you know, his name ends in "El" and therefore he must be a son of Jor-El. Unfortunately, this was a case of why you should know your audience when making a sly reference, and since none of my buddies were comic book guys or even slightly inclined to nerdy things, this one went completely over their heads. I also like to pick usernames that are somewhat in spirit with a forum's theme, so my usernames are all different across different forums. As far as privacy goes, I don't really mind if online folks know who I am in real life (and am happy to share things like real name, where I live/work, etc via PM or e-mail), and I like to think that I generally behave myself  . But I don't like knowing that Googling my name will produce a bunch of hits, so I try to avoid posting it in publicly accessible spaces. |
