My name is sparrow421, and I'm new here. This is the first time I join a forum . I am a fan of comics and comic art in general. Everything that is a comic colorful drawing I STOP to look! Because of that I like to draw comic style portraits and caricatures. I joined the forum to learn more about comics in general because they are the reason I draw in this style now and I used to read Donald duck comics from Disney as kid that are classics and they are super cool!! Now I've been reading more books like Stephen King lately, anyway I like to read books in general and I'm looking to start with comics again! And looking to learn about the subject more with people that might have something to say that I can learn from. Welcome to the forum! You will find lots of like minded friends here. You can also find lots of book suggestions/reviews right here along with tons of art/images and talks for our love of comic books. We even have a live get together once awhile which you can participate with: classiccomics.org/thread/7095/zoom-meetings-2021. Pop in and see the faces of some members. Have fun and enjoy the CCF world.

Hello, I'm Sam from the UK. I'm joining because my 9 year old nephew is desperate for advice on comics that would suit him. I was going to create a thread but I don't think I'm allowed yet!
Does anyone have any ideas? Atm we are only finding comics that he calls 'babyish' such as Batman scooby doo but the ones he likes the look of (action, dark colours batman, wolverine etc) all seem to have adult themes that I'm not happy with him reading.
I was just wondering if there was a middle ground, i.e a comic which has action, fighting and looks adult but doesn't have any dark themes?
Thankyou!

My 9 and 11 year old really enjoy the IDW Avengers series, which has just the right amount of action, characterization, and laugh-out-loud humor to keep all three of us reading. Additionally, all three of my kids (my 13 year old included) adore Usagi Yojimbo.

I think others here will be able to provide better advice/recommendations, since I haven't been a reader of current monthly comics in decades. I just have to say that your nephew's description of stuff like Batman & Scooby Doo as 'babyish' brought a smile to my face. Back when I was 9 or 10, I probably would have had the same attitude, but today (as a middle-aged man) I would prefer something like that over most of the superhero comics currently being published by Marvel and DC.

Would be great if I could enjoy reading them with him too so that's promising. P.s sorry for the massive quote, don't really know how this works!

I know exactly what you mean! It's just a phase he is going through so really I'm looking to trick him into thinking he's reading an adult comic 😅

Hi everyone!
I'm a long-time comic book reader/collector, started as a wee lad in Queens New York back in 1977. My world was Spider-Man back then and he's still my sentimental favorite. Early on I was hooked on both Marvel and DC right off the newsstand (as well as collected editions like Fireside and Pocket Books), mostly the super-hero titles as well as Star Wars (my other great love, was right there at the beginning for the movie and the first waves of action figures). My other standout title was Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes. I jumped on right at the end of the Earthwar storyline in 1978 and had no idea what was going on or why Superboy was in the future with all these strange super-heroes, but I was hooked bigtime.
And then the most amazing 80's comic book reading childhood followed...by then we had moved to northern Vermont and those cold winters were perfect for reading comic books, and there were great comic book shops nearby. Mainstream super-hero stuff was going next level with Byrne, Perez, Simonson etc, plus Adventure Comics digests were reprinting tons of classic Silver and Golden age stories (all of a sudden I'm finding out about Challengers of the Unknown and the Metal Men!). I remember reading the Silver Age Legion run each month at the same time Levitz/Giffen were during the current series. And if that wasn't enough...the Indies and Marvel's Epic line! Nexus, Badger (my favorite), Cerebus, Dreadstar, Miracleman, etc.
I did still read a lot of comic books through the 90's and somewhat into the 2000's, and definitely stuff I've enjoyed during those years. Last 15-20 years my interest in newer titles has waned and I focus more on picking up collected editions and back issues of the older stuff.
Look forward to being here and joining in!
