What's a Comic Challenge?- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion - a way to figure out "what do I read next?" - motivation to try different genres - motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles - a place to get recommendations How does it work?- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month - we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month - you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read - in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter What makes it a "challenge"?- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed - the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine) Who can participate?- anyone and everyone! - you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that? - quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not When does it start and end?- it begins at dusk the night before the 1st of the month, and ends at dawn the following 1st - this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content - content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of the month for both Challenges Who wins?- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day

The month is almost over, the August Fantasy Challenge seemed to get some good participation; so I figured I'd just try it again sticking to the schedule I'm already doing at my other place.
Not sure what I'll focus on for the month, as my tastes are quite eclectic and almost everything is in my comfort zone.

Yeah, there aren't many comics I won't read.
I guess I can do old school non-comedy comic strips. That's something I really don't know much about and I've never read Terry and the Pirates or Hogarth's Tarzan.
I'm generally weak in magazines as well.
Other than that... hardcore gay Japanese tentacle porn?

I'd say Manga is clearly the one are that is outside my comfort zone. But honestly I may bow out this month and finish my re-read of Fables. Though maybe not. I may delve into Lone Wolf and Cub.

Yeah I am not too sure how much I will participate in Sept. I am focused on reading stuff I already own that I haven't read and not too much I own is outside my comfort zone (and my comfort zone is pretty expansive anyways). I'll follow along and see if anything folks are reading strikes my fancy, and maybe add something here or there if I do read something out of my comfort zone, but otherwise I'll be a spectator 'til Oct.

Yeah, I'm so far behind in my reading (20,000 comics?) that it's difficult to read things that aren't near the top of my 'must read' piles.
But I figured it'd be nice to have one month a year where there'd be some encouragement to try some new things. The Challenges aren't meant to restrict us to just that subject for the entire month, just a nudge to keep our eyes off just superhero books and spread across all spectrums of comics.
I'll likely read some of the stuff that I ended up with only because it was part of a bundle, and maybe some manga. But I'll likely end up only reading a few things that qualify and mostly getting back to my entire Avengers run read through.
Really looking forward to October, as horror is my favorite genre for film and comics.

Hmmm. I don't think I've been reading that much super heroes in the past year. And I've still got the whole of Snyder's work on Batman which I have bought for some reason but never read. Maybe that would be a good challenge as it seems to be quite polarizing as well?

Trevor, have you decided what the genre will be yet, or is this a discussion thread to decide?

Trevor, have you decided what the genre will be yet, or is this a discussion thread to decide? This month is one where everyone's genre(s) could be different; it's anything "outside your comfort zone" or "explore the possibilities" month. It doesn't have to be a genre/company/subject you necessarily dislike, just something that is outside of your usual reading patterns. If you rarely read fantasy for example, you could have a two month fantasy marathon here. Personally, manga and slice-of-life are types of books I rarely read, so I'll hopefully hit at least a few of those in September. October is horror of course, a monthly challenge can go hand in hand with what you all already do every October I think. November we do Humor/Comedy at the forum where I started these Challenges, but I know these threads of mine aren't 'official' and I have no right to choose every month. Selfishly, since I'm a lifelong member at dvdtalk and this forum is now my second home, I'd rather the months sync, and we already have the schedule pretty much set over there. But then of course, how many of us are OCD enough to even participate in 12 monthly challenges? I figured I'm one of the very few and that most people would just pop in for a month here and there.

It's as "official" as any other thread that has been started here. As far as I'm concerned, you are part of this community and it's nice that you're introducing new subjects. As for this month, I have never read a manga comic so maybe I'll start there.

Well, maybe some Speed Racer back in the 1990s when Now Comics was putting those out (iirc). As for setting the schedule and "official-ness", I'm still new enough to not be sure how moderation and everything else works here. I've been on some forums where the moderation is so heavy that I'm afraid to even post at all. In theory, I guess we could all start a Challenge thread and have 50 different genres per month! I don't know what's best. There is no way to please everyone of course. The main purposes of having them is a 'noble' one I think, monthly threads to encourage group discussion and motivation for working on our 'to read' piles. FWIW, here is the schedule at my first place: January - TV/Movie/Book February - Eisner/Harvey/Etc WinnersMarch - Rotating CompanyApril - TBD (random idea every year) May - Make-Your-OwnJune - RealityJuly - Science FictionAugust - FantasySeptember - Outside-Your-Comfort-ZoneOctober - HorrorNovember - ComedyDecember - Holiday

I might have to go to the library to get a Manga book.

I have the first three Dark Horse omnibii of Lone Wolf and Cub sitting on my nightstand, so I may join you in this. Manga is a blindspot for me, and I'd like to have more knowledge of the format.

Oh, how could I forget Lone Wolf and Cub? I have read manga, not much, but I read the first couple years that First reprinted back in the day.
