It's coming...It's time to resurrect our yearly Autumn tradition! The best part of September is readying your list for The CCF Long Halloween! Each October, we countdown our horror related Top 5 once per week, building up to Halloween night. Hope you'll consider joining us this year! The Challenge: Rank your Top 5 classic comic book horror artists! Images and explanations are expected The Fine Details:1. Using the community's definition of a "classic comic book," your list should rank artists solely upon their output published prior to October 1st, 2005. Beyond that, it's all up to you. You can include artists who spent a lifetime working in the horror genre, artists who did one horror cover ever that left a striking impression on you, etc. And it's also up to you to define what "comic book horror" is and is not. The whole thing is your call so long as you're willing to explain your rationale. The Process:We will each post one of our entries each week, along with an explanation as to why we chose it: October 2nd: Our #5 choices October 9th: Our #4 choices October 16th: Our #3 choices October 23rd: Our #2 choices October 30th: Our #1 choices (If you'd like to review the previous year's Long Halloween, you can find it here!) Questions? Suggestions? General observations about which artists you're considering? Post it all here! And remember -- September flies by quicker than you think it will!

I was wondering how'd you'd do this again and horror artists definitely gives some variety from last year although my number one may essentially be the same as last year.

So we're a little less than three weeks away, and I haven't even gone into my back issues yet. I have some ideas of who I'll probably go with, but I think the most fun will be in finding those amazing covers and interiors done by artists that we don't traditionally associate with horror. Neal Adams, for example, will definitely be making my list.

Though I don't think he's that off beat of a choice for horror, he did some of the best covers on House of Mystery, many of his best issues of Batman had horror elements (especially one of my all time favorites 'tec #408) and his Deadman was fantastic.

Yup. I'd say, at this early stage, it's likely my list will include Adams, Corben, Frazetta, Wrightson, and probably one of the Spanish Warren artists. I reserve the right to change my mind on all of this, of course.

Let's me that I'm reading right - we are allowed to post ONE image of our favorite horror artist on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and the 30th and I was wondering can we post another image to help me/us in our explanation of why we chose it?

I'll probably have some left field picks....

Don't show your hand, Shax! Maybe I was trying to fake you guys out In all seriousness, a few other artists have definitely sprung to mind as I've continued to comb my collection. Can't wait to see what I decided upon!

Four days left!
I believe I have my final list.
Number of artists on my list who are traditionally associated with horror: 3
Every single artist I selected is from the Bronze Age. I guess that reveals both my particular bias and my general ignorance of horror from other eras.

I know there will be many people picking 4 or 5 traditional comic artists for the genre, and that is great because I will love seeing the covers/art/explanations.
My approach is going to be lesser known artists...perhaps someone who only did a few covers and of those few, maybe only one gem. But if that gem stands up with the best (and trust me, I think you will agree that mine do), then that artist is on my list. Hopefully that makes some sense...
And I will be looking solely at the cover because, as an art fan, that is the real selling point of the comic. The people on my list are covers only type people. Why? Well I look at covers A LOT in my spare time and do not have the largest collection of comics to pull enough interior art images from some of the more big name artists in the genre

Shax, One final question before I make my picks:
Does the artist have to be an interior artist? Are we allowed to pick a cover artist? I know Pinkfloydsound17 is looking at mostly for cover artists, but I just want a final call from the HQ....
