He elevated F/X from a gimmick action movie into more of a character film, with a gimmick. Always good in anything.

Another great character actor gone. He was in a lot of significant films of my teen years: First Blood (the only one of the Rambo films I like), Gorky Park, Silverado, F/X, etc.
However, it was only when looking at his filmography this morning did I learn that he was also the voice of Django in Ratatouille .
R.I.P. Mr Dennehy.

R. I. P. cartoonist extraordinaire, Gene Deitch. Deitch was such an incredibly inspirational cartoonist. His work at UPA helped change animation. I picked up the collected Terr'ble Thompson and it's brilliant.

Gene Deitch with a couple of the characters he was famous for. Used to love watching Tom and Manfred the Wonder Dog on Captain Kangaroo back in the late 50s / early 60s. Loved Clint Clobber, too. Sort of a Ralph Kramden type.

Grew up watching Deitch animation. Sad news but at least there is plenty of his work around to enjoy. I have His Tom and Jerry toon shorts on DVD. While very different from the MGM norm and many are critical of it I feel they are story/visually unique, distinct, original and quite funny given the budget and utilizing unproven Czech animators. RIP Gene

I didn't care for the Tom & Jerry stuff, when I first saw it; but, I appreciated it more later. Seeing his other work helps appreciate him more, as Tom & Jerryis kind of a filterted thing. I don' think the Chuck Jones ones were his best work, either,; but, both were brilliant in their other work.

RIP to Youtube content provider Steve Cash, creator of the Talking Kitty Cat series, with the foul-mouthed Sylvester, lovable labrador Shelby, Gibson, Random Kitty, and Gibbyson.
(Warning, occasional language)
Cash was only 40 and suffered from Bipolar Disorder. He took his own life.
Cash was an amazingly talented young man whose videos were hilarious and inventive. My wife and I loved these videos and his death has hit her hard, as she also suffers from Bipolar Disorder; but, is on a medication that helps her manage far better than those in past. Apparently, Steve hadn't found something like that.

Bass singer for The Statler Brothers, Harold Reid, has passed away at age 80. The Statlers were a part of my childhood as my parents played their music all the time. I was always mesmerized by his bass voice. Always thought he was really well featured on their version of Ricky Nelson's "Hello Mary Lou." And their classic

"Flowers on the Wall" is not only a great song, but it's a great shelter-in-place song.

Always liked the Statler Bros. Coincidentally, I was just watching some early Hee Haw episodes and was reminded of how much better country music was, before the 1980s. Better musicians, better singers, harmonies, etc. I've always tended more to the Blue Grass and Western ends of country; but, tended to like Buck Owens Bakersfield sound. Then, there was the crew of Texans, like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.
We used to get the Statler Bros syndicated tv show, which was fairly entertaining, though Hee Haw had more to offer, if You weren't a die-hard country fan.
No mistaking that bass voice, though.
