While checking on something else, I was saddened to learn that Bermudan-born British actor Earl Cameron has died on July 3 at the age of 102. While certainly not a household name, Cameron was a familiar face that you would certainly recognise if you were a regular viewer of British film and television. Cameron was one of the first actors to break the colour bar in British film industry after WWII. He was one of the first black actors (if not the first) to appear on Doctor Who, appearing as astronaut Williams in William Hartnell's last story "The Tenth Planet". Supposedly this was the first time an astronaut had been played by a black actor anywhere. He also appeared in many other classic British series, including Danger Man and The Prisoner. Cameron is perhaps best known to the general public for playing Pinder, James Bond's Bahamas contact in Thunderball. Cameron had only recently retired, having been acting up till 2013, and appeared in Inception in 2010. R.I.P. Earl Jerusalem Cameron.

RIP Grant Imahara, who died suddenly from a brain aneurysm at age 49. Best known as one of the co-hosts on Mythbusters, he was an electrical engineer and roboticist by training, and worked for a long time for Lucasfilm's in the THX and Industrial Light and Magic divisions.
My wife is a big fan of Mythbusters and I used to watch it with her often. This one took me by surprise.

RIP to beloved children's author Joanna Cole, creator of the Magic School Bus series. Cole created the series, in 1986, with illustrator Bruce Degan, and crafted the teacher of a group of students, Ms Frizzle, on her own 5th grade teacher. In each book, Ms frizzle and the kids take a field trip on the Magic School Bus and explore the worlds of science, learning about their world, universe, and their own bodies. The series was adapted by PBS, with Lily Tomlin voicing Ms Frizzle, then relaunched on Netflix, with Kate Mckinnon voicing the beloved teacher. The beloved series was showered with accolades, including the NEA Foundation Award for Outstanding Service to Public Education. Cole previously worked as a librarian, answered letters to the editor at Newsweek, was a magazine and book editor, before writing her own book about cockroaches (title Cockroaches) in 1971. She would go on to write over 250 books for children, including the Magic School Bus series. Hers were the kind of books you loved to watch children discover, as it both entertained an enlightened them, something very rare. It was a wonderful gateway to science for kids. She will be greatly missed.

I re-read March just two weeks ago. John Lewis was an absolute hero whose loss leaves us all much, much poorer. What example of courage, grace and nobility the man set!

These qualities are always rarely seen, but even less so in today's world, which seems to be bearing out Hobbes's most famous observation.
