Flat-picker extraordinaire Tony Rice passed away at age 69. Rice was one of the great bluegrass guitarists of our time.

R. I. P. Dawn Wells, best known as Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island. No more coconut cream pies for the castaways.

R. I. P. Dawn Wells, best known as Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island. No more coconut cream pies for the castaways. I met Dawn Wells at a convention last year when she, Barbara Eden and Barbara Feldon came out to Australia. While I was standing in line at Barbara Eden's table to get her autograph for a friend, there was a lull at Dawn's table. She saw me standing at a few feet away from her, smiled and told me how much she loved my hair (which is gradually going silver). I was so touched by this, that I came back the next day and got her autograph and got to speak to her for a few minutes. I am so glad I did. A lovely, genuine woman whose affection for her cast mates was obvious.

Yep. Tina Louise is the last Castaway. And she is going to hate the fact that when she dies, she is going to be remembered as Ginger. According to Dawn Wells, she hated the show. She was a successful stage actress in New York and only joined for the show because the producers told her that it was a program about a Hollywood star trapped on a desert island and that she was going to be playing the central character. But she was also a professional, and did everything the show required of her, but returned to New York as soon as it was over.

She did a ton of charity work in the area. She was by all reports a very giving and lovely lady.

For some years, Dawn Wells had a business that produced clothing lines for people with physical disabilities, with features to make them easier to put on and take off, and the like. She worked with multiple charities, including one with Drema Denver, Bob Denver's widow.
Everything I have ever read or interview I have seen said she was pretty much what you saw,: a beautiful, classy lady, with genuine warmth and compassion for everyone.
She has told the story of being on a charity-based trip in the Solomon Islands or somewhere in that region of the Pacific and people recognizing her as Mary Ann. She told of boarding an airplane and passengers spontaneously started singing the show's theme song. (later used for a dramatization of the creation and behind-the-scenes of the show).
From what I have read, she and Alan Hale embraced their notoriety and were never anything but pure class and delight to their fans and wore their time like a badge of honor. The others, as well, to varying degrees, though Natalie Schaeffer and Bob Denver were more private people.
That show was corny and silly; but damn it made you smile and a lot of it was the genuine chemistry between the cast. I never hesitated with the "Ginger or Mary Ann" game; always Mary Ann. She was everything you could want in a partner, and, a couple of episodes showed that there was some sizzle, underneath, when she wanted to show it. Dawn Wells exemplified that too, at least publicly.

we also lost dancer/innovator Shabba-Do yesterday (tho he was overshadowed by Dawn Wells' passing) he was best known to 80's kids as "Ozone" in "Breakin" and "Breakin 2: Electic Boogaloo" - but he also worked with Toni Basil & Sheila E - and was a dancer and choreographer for many big acts, including Madonna, Lionel Riche, Luthor Vandross, and more ew.com/movies/breakin-star-adolfo-shabba-doo-quinones-dies-at-65/

Rapper/producer/supervillain Daniel Dumile aka MF DOOM aka Viktor Vaughn aka Metal Fingers aka King Geedorah aka Zev Love X died. He passed on October 31, but in keeping with how he was in life, it wasn't announced until today. I know rap isn't the most popular genre around here, but dude is an absolute legend, and even though I was in my 20s when his solo debut Operation:Doomsday came out it is one of the most important albums for me.
I don't know how to post YouTubes from mobile, but if you're so inclined, a search for MF Doom, Viktor Vaughn, King Geedorah, Madvillain, KMD or Monsta Island Czars will return nothing but amazing music.

Hell of a dancer and choreographer.
