Mad Magazine writer extraordinaire Frank Jacobs has passed away at a sprightly 92. No obituary yet, but it has been confirmed by his son. Jacobs was my #11 choice for favorite scripter in the last Classic Comics Christmas. Just an incredibly funny writer.

Jacobs was my #11 choice for favorite scripter in the last Classic Comics Christmas. Just an incredibly funny writer. And author of this biography that I can't afford a copy of but would love to read: I I have this (minus the dust jacket). My brother found it at a garage sale for a buck and snapped it up for me. A helluva good read, and it was invaluable in researching M.C. Gaines for my book.
Cei-U! I summon the madmen!

Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, has died at age 99. Son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, he was the great-great grandchild of Queen Victoria (many of the royal houses of Europe could trace direct lineage to Victoria, including King George V, Tsar Nicholas II and Kaiser Wilhelm II, who were all her grandchildren and opponents, in WWI). His father was a noted raconteur and his mother suffered from mental illness and he moved between members of his family in his early years. After the Greco-Turkish War, his father was evacuated from Greece, after political turmoil , and settled in Paris. He was raised there for a time, then sent to school in England. He entered the Royal Naval College and served in the Royal Navy, during WW2, on a series of ships. In 1939, he met Princesses Margaret and Elizabeth, when his uncle, Lord Mountbatten, asked him to escort them on a tour. Elizabeth fell in love and they began to exchange letters. In 1946, Phillip asked King George for her hand in marriage, which was granted, provided a formal announcement was made after her 21st birthday. They married on November 20, 1947. Phillip renounced his Greek and Danish titles and gave up life in the Royal Navy to be the consort to Princess Elizabeth, who ascended to the throne in 1952, after the sudden death of her father. He would spend the remainder of his life carrying out public duties, with the Queen or solo, where, over time, he built up a reputation for saying bizarre things to people he met, sometimes potentially insulting, sometimes oblivious; but, at least one biographer suggested he did it deliberately to introduce a note of humor into a visit that might have been an otherwise stuffy affair. In 2013, Phillip became the longest-lived royal consort. Now, the country, in the midst of the pandemic, prepares for his funeral, for which he wanted a minimal "fuss."

Wow, we are living through yet more history as it happens. I wonder if this marks the beginning of a transition of power soon. Will the Queen step down? At her age, with her beloved passing, will she soon go to join him? I know losses that late can have that effect. Rest in Peace, and I hope their family can attain whatever peace and comfort they may. He certainly had a long life.

Sorry but no. Most of us are just going about our daily business. The media are having a field day wailing and moaning, tearing their clothes and rubbing ashes in their hair telling us we're all saddened by this. We're not.

Rest in Peace, and I hope their family can attain whatever peace and comfort they may. He certainly had a long life. Everything I have ever read or heard says she took her coronation vows very seriously, regarding until her death and had no plans to step down, in her lifetime. Given the long life of her mother and her own constitution, she may have many years to go. Ever since I was in my 20s I have heard questions asked about the possibility of the Queen abdicating in favor of Charles and it hasn't happened. I think the bigger question is after she either retires or, more likely, passes on. Will there still be a public support for the monarchy or a sentiment that it is time to end it? You always get stories of both when events like this come around, but it usually ends up being mostly content filler.

I was referring the the State and don't presume to speak for any citizens. As an American, I look at it simply in a historical and cultural perspective. The Queen and Prince Phillip, putting aside their State roles, were/are one of the few living links to pre-War Britain. In my 54 years, there has always been Queen Elizabeth and prince Phillip of England, while other European royal houses have come and gone and elected heads of state have served their terms and retired and/or passed on.

I saw recently that DMX had overdosed and was on life support. The prognosis wasn't looking good, but I hoped he might pull through. Sad to hear he didn't. His story of addiction is quite tragic. RIP and party up in the sky. Added context if anyone is curious about the tragedy of it. Very sad. He was a talented guy despite his struggles. DMX’s ‘curse’: Tricked into smoking crack at 14 started lifelong addiction

RIP to Anne Beatts, former writer for National Lampoon and the original Saturday Night Live, as well as creator of the cult sit-com Square Pegs (with a young Sarah Jessica Parker). Beatts was one of the first female writers for the National Lampoon and among her many contributions was a notorious fake Volkswagen ad that lampooned the Chappaquiddick Scandal, leading to Volkswagen threatening to sue. She often worked with Michael O'Donoghue and the pair moved on to write for ASNL, with the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players. Beatts wrote the "Nerds" sketches, with Bill Murray as Todd and Gilda Radner as Lisa Loopner, Dan Akroyd's Irwin Mainway sketches (the sleazy toy company owner, with things like Bag of Glass and Johnny Switchblade), the Fred Garvin, Male Prostitute sketch , Buck henry's pedophile babysitter Uncle Roy and wrote and appeared in the spoof commercial for Speed... (Quality sucks; shot off of a tv screen) She was one of 3 female writers, along with Rosie Shuster and Marilyn Suzanne Miller. John Belushi famously tried to intimidate Lorne Michaels into firing the female staff and then refused to appear in their sketches when he refused. She wrote Gilda Radner's Broadway show, Gilda Live and created the tv series Square Pegs, for which she hired 5 women writers and one male, for the writing staff. The show featured a pair of awkward teenage girls in high school, somewhat inspired by Beatts' childhood (as was the Todd & Lisa material) and it quickly grew a cult following, but lasted only one season. Bil Murray guest appeared as a favor to Beatts, for one episode. Beatts would go on to write for Murphy Brown and A Different World and spent her later years teaching at Chapman University, in California, while developing other projects. A brilliantly funny writer, who gave the world a lot of joy, along with some extremely talented performers.
