Bill Sienkiewicz has reported that Tim Sale has passed away at 66. R. I. P. I think I first encountered him in the Challengers of the Unknown mini. But I really loved the Batman Halloween Specials.

I think I first encountered Kelly's art on Micronauts packaging... I had no idea until recently that he did those or the Kiss album covers. I mainly knew him for his fantasy book and magazine cover art.

RIP Terry Pavlet, an artist, a prolific and talented artist with many, many credits in the RPG world and a handful of comics credits with smaller publishers. We had mutual acquaintances in the gaming industry and had been FB friends for a short time, and he was always brightening our feed with some piece of art of or an excited post about an upcoming gaming event, a movie or TV show we mutually admired, or an appreciation of comic or gaming artists. He had been excitedly posting in early June about his daughter graduating and his excitement for an appearance at a show he had in early July, but then radio silence. He passed unexpectedly last Sunday, and his family wanted some time before the word was spread, so most of us not in his closest circle just found out this morning. Rest in peace Mr. Pavlet. We were not close, but your joi de vivre was a bright spot for me in these dark times. My heart goes out to your friends and family.

RIP to Hershel W. "Woody" Williams, a Marine and the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient of WW2. Williams came from West Virginia and won the Medal of Honor for his actions at Iwo Jima, clearing machine gun positions and pillboxes, to clear the way for tanks and infantry. He fought for over 4 hours to clear lanes so that tanks could get into better positions to support an infantry advance against the Japanese positions. However, it was his actions after the war that truly deserve praise. He served 20 years in the Marine Corps, then another 33 years in the Veterans Administration, as a veterans service representative. He said coming home to his fiance was the goal that helped him stay alive then, and he was married to her for 62 years. He also said that the Medal of Honor saved his life after the war, as it forced him to speak about his experiences and deal with the trauma he experienced. Semper Fi, Marine! His story can be read here.

Former Hell's Angel head Sonny Barger passes away, at 83Barger was leader of the Oakland branch and involved in the infamous Altamont Rolling Stones concert, where a fan was stabbed. He continued to claim the Hell's Angels, who were hired as "security" (whose bright idea was that?), acted in self defense. Unh-huh. I met Barger, several years ago, when his memoir came out. His publisher arranged a signing tour along Route 66 and Springfield, IL was one of the stops. I read the book; but, didn't take it for gospel. He downplayed illegal stuff. The media over-sensationalized stuff; but, the truth was, the club was involved in violent crime and drug trafficking, which is well documented. He had throat cancer, in the early 80s, and had a trachea ring inserted; so, he had to think about his answers to questions, plug the ring and speak. The local paper carried on an interview, in this manner. The signing was an interesting event and his people were pretty efficient in working with us, without creating any problems for us or our other customers. They did request to have an area reserved to park their motorcycles and protect them and we let them park them on our sidewalk. After the signing, they were headed to a gathering, at a local park, before moving on to the next stop. They all got on their bikes and started gunning them. They were all parked with their exhaust pointed at the front of our store. Is they gunned their engines, I watched the glass windows vibrate from the force of the exhaust and immediately knew that it had been a bad idea to park them there. Luckily, the glass held. There was also a hearse, decorated with a fake skull, that one of the members told me belonged to some "journalist", who was following them, writing a story. I inferred, by the way the guy said "journalist" and rolled his eyes, that they didn't think too much of them. They also didn't think much of Hunter S Thompson. Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson they liked. The event was on a Sunday and I waited to see how some of our usual post-Church crowd would view this signing, though no one ever registered any shock or complaint.

Passing along the news of the loss of one of the early posters in our former home over at CBR-someone just reported today that Richard White aka Fenris passed away about a month ago. Some of members here who were longtime posters over there may have known, interacted with, or been friends with him. It was a bit before my time, but he seemed quite well liked and had won the equivalent of our Captain Jim award when they did forum member voted awards in 2001. Thoughts to all who knew him and will feel his loss.

We spent an afternoon together at SDCC talking Silver Age Marvel and watching fanboys flock around the autograph booths of pretty celebs (his running commentary was hilarious) that is one of my most cherished con memories. RIP, Richard. You were a good friend.

He brought wisdom and maturity to any conversation (not an inconsiderable feat when the subject is gun control, abortion or evolution!) but also unapologetic glee when he really enjoyed a comic-book. I recall being very impressed by his joining the navy and by his later return to school, an inspiring example of someone taking charge of their own life. I always regretted not seeing Fenris here at the CCF. I'll miss the running gag about his avatar being a wolf and not a goat. Rest in peace, you great shaggy sun eater . You were a great online pal, and you will not be forgotten.

James Caan has passed away at age 82. A truly exceptional actor when he wanted to be, he created one of the great Italian gangsters in Sonny Corleone. Also excellent in Brian's Song, Thief, and Gardens of Stone. And I have far too much love for Rollerball.
