Marsha Hunt, age 104, actress and one of the last surviving victims of the Hollywood blacklist of 1950, and an activist for several good causes. I found out about her death, and life, from metafilter.com. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marsha_Hunt_(actress,_born_1917) Had never heard of her until I happened upon a feature about her on TCM a few months ago. Fascinating person whose heart was always in the right place, as well as a good actor. Her work with the UN was outstanding.

My apologies, Prince Hal . I was in a bad mood yesterday morning, and unfortunately you copped some of the flak, for which I am sorry. Your sources are correct and I should have known you would have done your research. Part of the issue is semantics. Conscription is a loaded term here in Australia, and the plebiscites on conscription during WWI nearly tore the country in half (more so than our actual involvenebt in the war). As result, most Aussies (myself included), do not think of the Mandatory Service Act as 'conscription', but reserve 'conscription' to mean 'conscription for overseas service'. Anyway. I hope we are still friends. This has just been a stark reminder for me as to why I usually stay away from political discussions, and as to why I should I examine my own mood before I lash out at my friends. So again, I can only apologise for something I dashed out in haste. We now return you to your regularly scheduled R.I.P. Thread. Figured it was a "translation" issue. Besides, I can't be mad at a fellow Tomahawk connoisseur, foxley . No harm, no foul, mate! Muchos gracias, amigo.

RIP to Greek actress and icon Irene Papas, who appeared in Zorba the Greek, The Guns of Navarone and Costa Gravas' Z, as the widow of slain Left Wing labor leader Yves Montand, whose murder ends up leading to the coup by the Greek military junta (based on actual events). Her mother was a teacher and her father taught drama, and she spent her life acting. She started in theater, before moving to film, in 1951 and then international stardom. She was also noted as a singer, as she released an album, The Songs of Theodorakis, in collaboration with Greek composer and musician Mikis Theodorakis, who created the music for both Zorba The Greek and Z. Paralleling her role in Z, she was also a political activist, speaking out publicly against the military junta, which forced her and Theodorakis into exile, until the regime fell from power, in 1974. She was 96.

Oh no!!! She will always be Penelope to me. The real one, the one from Rossi's L'Odissea (which as everyone knows is the one true adaptation of Homer's work)!

Just saw the news that British novelist Hilary Mantel died yesterday at the age of 70, apparently after suffering a stroke a few days earlier. She was best known and highly praised for her historical novels, particularly the most recent trilogy set in 16th century England during the reign of Henry VIII. I've only read A Place of Greater Safety, which is set during the French Revolution and focuses on three of its main figures, Robespierre, Danton and Desmoulins - a very impressive work.

Oh, man. More bad news: John Hartman, the co-founder and original drummer of the Doobie Brothers, has died at the age of 72. I've always loved the Doobies, and they were the first band I ever saw live - at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA in 1987 during one of their reunion tours (although at that point Hartman was not playing with them - he only rejoined a few years later when they again reunited and started a new round of tours).

RIP to Louise Fletcher, who won an Academy Award for her role as Nurse Ratched in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” She was 88. -M She was also known to us Trekkies as Kai Winn, arguably the most memorable villain from Deep Space Nine. She was so good at being so detestable.

She was also very funny in the comedy spoof High School High, with Jon Lovitz, which satirized the cliches of inspirational teacher dramas, as the evil school principal.
