Rough week for cartoonists, we lost another of the New Yorker/National Lampoon crowd, RIP to Sam Gross, one of the best single panel cartoonists to have put pen and brush to paper.

R.I.P. to Grace Bumbry who has passed away aged 87 in Vienna. Bumbry was one of the first African-Americans to gain international fame as an opera singer. Born in Missouri in 1937, at age 17 she won a radio talent contest in St. Louis. Prizes for first place included a $1000 war bond, a trip to New York, and a scholarship to the St. Louis Institute of Music; however, the institution would not accept her because she was black. Embarrassed, the contest promoters arranged for her to appear on Arthur Godfrey's nationally televised Talent Scouts program, singing Verdi's aria "O don fatale" from Don Carlos. The success of that performance led to an opportunity to study at Boston University College of Fine Arts. She later transferred to Northwestern University, where she met the German dramatic soprano and noted Wagnerian singer Lotte Lehmann, who became her mentor. She moved to Paris in 1960 where she quickly achieved success in the opera world. She possessed the unusual talent to be able to perform as both a mezzo-soprano and a soprano. Among other honors, she was bestowed the UNESCO Award, the Distinguished Alumna Award from the Academy of Music of the West, Italy's Premio Giuseppe Verdi, and was named Commandeur des Arts et Lettres by the French government. She received a Grammy Award in 1972 for Best Opera Recording. On December 6, 2009, she was among those honored with the 2009 Kennedy Center Honors, for her contribution to the performing arts.

^^^ Years ago I saw her in performances a few times at the Met, in Aida and Don Carlo. She never disappointed--what a rich voice and strong stage presence. RIP MS. Bumbry.

RIP to the "Godfather of Poker" Doyle Brunson, who passed at age 89 today. When the big poker craze caught on in the 20oughts, Brunson was the elder statesman whose presence balanced all the young guns in many of those WSOP broadcasts on ESPN and he had a certain charisma about him, so that I always enjoyed watching him play.

Reports are coming in that British illustrator Russ Nicholson passed on May 10th. He was huge in the ttrpg field, including doing a lot of the iconic art from the first Fiend Folio for TSR, which is wher eI first encountered his art. From the Fiend Folio, one of my favorite monsters..The Grell -M

I just had to look beyond his politics. Honestly his most impressive accomplishment may have been winning the $2000 H.O.R.S.E. bracelet in 2003. He was 70 at the time and H.O.R.S.E. is the ultimate test of skill across various poker games.

The great Jim Brown has passed away at age 87. You can debate across eras and across positions, but any debate over the greatest football player of all time has to include Jim Brown. Brown retired before I was born, but he was still talked about with reverence when I was an NFL fan as a kid. Brown averaged 104.3 yards per game and 5.2 yards per carry. Only Barry Sanders could even come close to those numbers. He retired while he was still in his prime because he could make more money acting. I loved him in The Dirty Dozen.

I spent a lot of time admiring and marvelling at his artwork in my childhood.

The best running back ever. No arguments allowed. As well as an all-time lacrosse player. Ten letters in four sports at Syracuse.
