R.I.P. Bobby Osborne, the mandolin playing half of the legendary Osborne Brothers. A bluegrass and country music legend The Osborne Brothers were legends in their own right as well as being links to Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin and the rest of the founders of bluegrass music. And I missed this one a few days back. R.I.P. Jesse McReynolds. Another link to the distant past of bluegrass and country music, McReynolds was one half of what was variously called Jim and Jesse, The McReynolds Brothers and The Virginia Boys. A great mandolin player and consummate performer who was doing 60-70 shows a year in to his 80s.
Dang it. The world of us 8-stringers just got a little smaller. I was a fan of both, Bobby slightly more so than Jesse, but they will both be missed.
I have thought a few times about buying and trying to learn to play the mandolin. When my middle son was playing guitars of various types (he still has a very nice resonator and a decent lap steel) I almost bought one. But, as I recall, I spent the money for a new snare drum for my youngest son. Maybe after retirement. I should actually dig out that lap steel and play with it.

I play about 10 different instruments with varying degrees of proficiency, but mandolin is my absolute favorite by a long shot.
If you ever decide to go down that road, I can help point you in the right direction in terms of getting your biggest bang for the buck. As you may or may not know, mandolin prices can increase geometrically by build quality. Cheap ones are usually total crap, and expensive ones can get stratospheric in price.
Unlike guitars, it's difficult to find reasonable mid-grade mandolins with a good mix of build quality and economy, but they're out there.

Maybe I'll get the gig if Rankin-Bass ever does a Rudolph re-make-- I'd probably look pretty good as a snowman.

Self-deprecation and humility are the trickiest and most elusive of all skills-- not enough, and you come off as totally pompous; too much and people think you have self-esteem issues. It's a fine line, and I have stepped off to either side at various points in my life. I'm far from perfect, but you didn't hear that from me.
And I've never been into self-deletion... I heard that will make you go blind and grow hairy palms. No, wait...

Bald Mountain, aka Big Baldy, is the primary ski mountain in Sun Valley. I couldn’t figure out how I hadn’t heard about it.

I have been expecting this news since he went missing, but it is still a blow. He was a fantastic actor. So many great movies: A Room with a View, The Killing Fields, Warlock, Arachnophobia, Naked Lunch, Leaving Las Vegas, Crooked House...
One of his more obscure ones I can recommend is Romasanta: The Werewolf Hunt. Ignore the lurid title. It as actually a psychological thriller loosely based on the case of Spain's first documented serial killer, with Sands giving a performance that is both chilling and magnetic as the title character.

I completely missed this, even though a radio show I was listening to was featuring music from his films. I'd assumed it was his birthday. I've liked him ever since Gothic.

RIP to Canadian nurse and sex educator Sue Johanson..... Her father was a decorated veteran of the British Army and her mother came from an affluent family, but died when Sue was 10. Sue earned her nursing degree at St Boniface Hospital, in Winnipeg. In 1970, Johanson opened the first birth control clinic, at Don Mills CI high school, in Toronto, the first clinic of its kind. She worked there as coordinator for 18 years. In the 1980s, Johanson gained fame and popularity as a radio call-in show host, on Q-107, in Toronto, with the Sunday Night Sex Show, transitioning to television, where her show was eventually picked up by the Oxygen cable network. Johanson was fearless in discussing sex topics, whether it was consumer advice about sex toys, describing to a caller the correct method to perform fellatio, or to discuss STDs. I saw her show on Oxygen, and was flabergasted as the seemingly good-natured little old woman proceeded to openly and directly discuss sexual matters, without irony or embarrassment, making Dr Ruth look like a prude, by comparison. She later made appearances on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Late Show With David Letterman, and the Tonight Show With Jay Leno, usually leaving the comedians red in the face, but always laughing.

R. I. P. Oscar winner (and four time nominee) Alan Arkin. Arkin was a super versatile actor, equally adept at comedy and drama. I really enjoyed him in the recent Netflix series The Kominsky Method.
