Marty Krofft has passed away at 86. Marty was the younger of the brother puppeteering team that went on to be among the most important producers of children's television in the U.S. in the 60s and 70s. Loved me some H.R. Pufnstuf and Liddsville back in the day. Is it true that they started all the younger people into psychedelics because of those puppets?

Yes, no one ever touched narcotics until HR Pufnstuff and Liddsvile. No one ate kelp until Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, and the Buggaloos were bigger than the Beatles! The Kroffts actually started, big time, with the Dean Martin Show, where they were featured early on. They created characters and sets for the Banana Splits Show, before doing their own shows, starting with HR Pufnstuf. My whole childhood was filled with the Krofft Brothers shows, starting with the Banana Splits, , up through the Krofft Super Show, Donnie & Marie, The Brady Variety Hour and the rest. Weird shows, but entertaining as hell and Billie Hayes, who played Witchiepoo, was awesome. Electra Woman and Dyna Girl was actually pretty decent superhero adventure, all things considered. Plus, if you were hitting puberty, like I was: Deidre Hall in spandex! There was a book about the Kroffts that was a pretty good read. They got the questions about the drug myths, but said they probably had the most straight-laced people working in their shows that you would find anywhere, in Hollywood. More people were probably turned onto the stuff by Scooby Snacks than dragons.

ps Sid Krofft is the only one left, out of that picture, if you equate Pufnstuf with Lennie Weinrib, who voiced him. Weinrib died in 2006 and Billie Hayes in 2021.
Sid is 94.

That is sad - I think he posted here on the Classics once or twice didn't he? His website was a great contribution and a tremendously fun and useful resource for comics readers and fans.

(...) Plus, if you were hitting puberty, like I was: Deidre Hall in spandex! I can't be the only one who found Dyna Girl (Judy Strangis) far more alluring, whether in spandex or civilian clothes.

RIP also to soul singer Jean Knight, best known for "Mr. Big Stuff".

UPDATE: I did a quick search of obits for Mike/Michael Voiles, but came up empty. Maybe no obit has been published.

UPDATE: I did a quick search of obits for Mike/Michael Voiles, but came up empty. Maybe no obit has been published. I've been trying to piece it together myself as I've always really valued Mike, both as the creator of such a critical project for comic book historians and as a person/member of this community. What I think I know is that he was either in his late forties or early fifties (his origin page references getting GI Joes for Christmas in 1984 and starting to get into comics), and that he made reference five or six years back to handing off the site to someone else soon and then stopped visiting the CCF shortly thereafter. My guess is he had some sort of life-threatening illness and spent the past few years fighting it courageously. But this is all conjecture based on very little info.

A significant loss no matter what the circumstances.

Wow that was one of my favorite childhood 45s of my folks. When I listened to it, I listened to King Floyd's Groove Me next or vice versa. I was just reading Mrs Knight's wikipedia page and found this out that I didn't know... "After the session was finished, the song was shopped to producers at several national labels, all of whom rejected it. But when King Floyd's hit "Groove Me" (also recorded at Malaco Studios) became a #1 R&B hit in early 1971, a producer at Stax Records remembered Knight's recording of "Mr. Big Stuff," and released it." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Knight
