Denny Laine, founding member of the Moody Blues and longtime member of Wings, has died at 79.
Go Now was a great song. And I think some of the tunes he wrote for Wings were quite good too. I'll have to look up track listings to remember the titles, but I believe the one on Venus and Mars I remember particularly liking.

Although he did a fantastic job on Go Now, it was indeed a cover tune written by Larry Banks and Milton Bennett, and originally recorded by Bessie Banks. It reached #40 stateside in early 1964. Laine heard Bessie Banks version, loved it, and convinced the band to record their own version. The Moodies cut and released their version later the same year-- topping the UK chart in late January 1965, however the song did not even enter the US chart until a month later.

Thanks, should have looked that up. I don't why, but I always assumed he wrote that one himself for some reason. I'll have to listen to that original sometime.

Legend RIP: Norman Lear dead at 101. A titan in television, who turned sitcoms into a platform to explore social issues, while still delivering laughs.

Legend RIP: Norman Lear dead at 101. Absolutely huge legacy in television in elevating the sitcom. And a huge legacy as a free speech advocate.

I'm seeing on social media via various sources at Twomorrows and Craig Yoe that comics historian and writer Roger Hill has passed away. I don't know a lot about Hill but I do know that he wrote a lovely book about Reed Crandall. R.I.P.

For those of us who couldn't make it to St. Mary of the Rosary Church in Nenagh, Tipperary.
If there is somewhere beyond, MacGowan has to be smiling.
And yes, there was dancing...

Actor Ryan O'Neal has passed away, at age 82. At first, he was a guest performer on 60s tv, until cast in the serial Peyton Place. He soon transitioned to films, garnering acclaim in Love Story and two of my favorites, from peter Bogdonovich, Paper Moon and What's Up Doc? The former is a Depression Era setting, with a bible selling con man and the daughter he meets, for the first time (played by daughter Tatum, who won the Oscar for her performance), in a nod to films like those pf Preston Sturges, and the latter a screwball comedy in the tradition of Howard Hawks and Sturges. The 70s were arguably his career height, with films like Barry Lyndon, A Bridge Too Far, The Driver, and The Main Event (reuniting with Barbara Streisand). The 80s weren't as kind to him and he had developed a reputation for being volatile and he had been accused of physical abuse by past wives and lovers. His relationship with his children was not good and his infidelity affected marriages and other relationships, including his with Farrah Fawcett, though they reconciled and were together at her death. O'Neal was capable of being a great actor, but his performances could be a mixed bag, with some seeming to be cold and emotionless and others well suited to his personality. He essentially plays the Cary Grant type, in What's Up Doc, mostly reacting to Streisand's (and others) craziness. Paper Moon let him play a deeper character and he did a fine job in A Bridge Too Far, as Maj General James Gavin, the legendary commander of the 82nd Airborne.

I glanced at some of the comments posted on YouTube, in which several people noted something to the effect that 'you must have done something right in your life to get a send-off like that.' Yep.

I've seen it reported on Facebook, by his son, that Ian Gibson has passed away. One of the mainstays of 2000 AD, I know Gibson best for his work with Alan Moore on The Ballad of Halo Jones. Gibson had been battling cancer and reportedly went in to hospice a few days ago.

That Mr. Miracle series was fun. My wife even read it at the time.
