R.I.P. to Tom Pritchard, the last Australian Rat of Tobruk who as passed away at the age of 102. I've been reading Antony Beevor's history of the Second World War, as well as his history of the Spanish Civil War and one thing that leaps out is how colonial formations were thrown into the heaviest fighting, by several European powers, whether it was Senegalese troops of the French Army, the ANZAC troops in North Africa, the Canadians in Normandy, the Indian Army in Burma or the International Brigades, in Spain. There is an old military joke about Montgomery being willing to fight to the last Allied soldier, meaning he was happy to sacrifice soldiers from other armies before British troops, though that is a bit simplistic. Still, those formations more often got the toughest jobs, much like the Scottish and Irish regiments got the toughest jobs in early wars. Part of the reason is that those soldiers had tough lives and were hard fighters; but, still, they paid a heavy price for their reputations.

RIP to a couple, from the world of sports and pop culture. First, wrestler Kevin Sullivan, who set the Florida territory on fire, as a Satanic cult leader, battling Dusty Rhodes, in the mid-80s, then as a heel fixture and booker for WCW, after Ted Turner bought the company. Sullivan was from Boston and had worked for the WWWF, in Memphis, Knoxville, Florida, Pensacola-Alabama, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Singapore, Japan and wherever WCW went.
The second, and better known nationally, is Les Nessman's favorite golfer, Chi Chi Rodriguez....

And golf fans, he was always fun to watch.

Man this one hurts, Rachael Lillis has passed away at the all too young age of 46. Rachael was a key Pokémon voice actress who voiced Misty and Jessie among others in the shows and films. I've always enjoyed Pokémon but my daughter grew up pretty much a mega fan, it has meant a ton to her growing up and was a huge inspiration on her own creative endeavors as an artist, animator, and writer. Knowing that, I was so happy that we were able to attend a convention last summer that had some of the Pokémon talent as guests including Rachael. My daughter was a little starstruck that day, so I went along with her and started the chats with the guests so she could feel comfortable to join in and enjoy as well. We went in order of the booths and Rachael was the first one we met. She was amazing with my daughter, she quickly got her very comfortable and even encouraged my daughter with her art when she heard about that part. Everyone we met was so nice as well, but Rachael had this amazing really sweet nature that was so calm and friendly. Her moment of kindness left such an impression on my daughter even though we had many other wonderful encounters that day. RIP Rachael (aka Jessie/Misty), the Pokémon world is much sadder today.

A couple of recent ones. Sergio Donati, prolific Italian screenwriter, who worked with Sergio Leone on Once Upon a Time in the West and on Duck, You Sucker! passed away on the 13th at age 91. Longtime stuntman and fight choreographer, Kim Kahana, passed away at age 94. Kahana worked as a stuntman on Cool Hand Luke, The Dirty Dozen and Planet of the Apes. Kahana coordinated fight scenes on Kung Fu as well as other television shows. He was a Korean War veteran who was awarded a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts. Dude was just a legit bad ass.

The brilliant Gena Rowlands left us yesterday. If you haven't seen A Woman Under the Influence, you're in a true tour d' force in acting. Watching her in every role was nothing short of amazing in all that she did. The wife of John Cassavetes, she appeared in almost all of his films, and she's wonderful in all of them. I have a soft spot for her in Jarmusch's Night on Earth and in The Mighty. She will be missed.

Actress Gena Rowlands has passed at age 94. Her performances in husband John Cassavetes' films earned her critical praise and several Oscar nominations. Younger folks may remember her as Gibbs' former mother-in-law on NCIS. No mater what she did, she was 100% committed to her craft. Cei-U! I summon the grande dame of indie cinema!

Peter Marshall, longtime host of the game show Hollywood Squares, has passed away, at 98. He was fun and personable and not afraid to poke fun at his own show, as seen in later years, on In Living Color.....

Geez....also passing away, singer/musician/author Greg Kihn, of The Greg Kihn Band, has passed away, at age 75, due to complications related to Alzheimer's Disease. Kihn was a favorite, with hits like 1983's "Jeopardy," and 1981's "The Breakup Song."
They don't write 'em like that anymore!
Kihn was also an author and was nominated for the Bram Stoker Award for his debut novel, Horror Show. He wrote 6 novels in all, and contributed to an anthology of stories from musicians. His 2013 novel, Rubber Soul, features a murder mystery, revolving around the Beatles.
Kihn also had a cameo in Weird Al Yankovic's parody of Jeopardy, "I Lost on Jeopardy," turning up at the end, mirroring a scene from his own music video for the original song.

Iconic French actor Alain Delon has passed away, at 88. So many great films, including an association with French director Jean-Pierre Melville, Italian directors Michelangelo Antonioni and Luchino Visconti, and in Hollywood fare, like Lost Command and Is Paris Burning?, directed by Rene Clement, who had cast him as Ripley, in Plain Soleil (aka Purple Noon), the first adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr Ripley. Highsmith loved his performance. In the 70s, he starred in one of my favorites, Zorro, which he did for his son, who loved the character. He was a complex person, though, with multiple affairs, allegations of abuse, and mixing in Far-Right politics.

Peter Marshall, longtime host of the game show Hollywood Squares, has passed away, at 98. He was fun and personable and not afraid to poke fun at his own show, as seen in later years When Doris Day died a few years ago, I wondered if she was the last remaining celebrity who started out as a big band singer. She wasn't; maybe Peter Marshall was. From the biography page on his website (https://petermarshallofficial.com/biography): "Marshall's love for music goes back to his days as a 15-year-old vocalist with the Bob Chester Orchestra through his years as a Las Vegas headliner. He has produced and toured in big band shows and released numerous albums..."also: Singing has always been a great love of mine, in fact I was a "boy singer" years before I did the Hollywood Squares.

Iconic French actor Alain Delon has passed away, at 88. A huge, huge actor and a legend in his own time. Like Jean-Paul Belmondo or Philippe Noiret, he was a significant part of France's modern cinematic pantheon. He had had a difficult childhood, going from one foster home to the next, until he joined the French navy at 17 and saw action in Indochina. He then tried his hand in acting where his baby face soon landed him roles where he could show his mettle, usually cast as a bad guy with a moral code. Cute anecdote: he starred as Zorro to please his young son, who loved the character!
