Classic retro-style Superman and Krypto looking at the real heroes of 9/11 by Alex Ross There's nothing about this cover I don't love. It still sends chills down my spine.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Andy Kubert used to be a brilliant artist with his own flow before he got tainted by 90ies super-heroes. On this he choses to abstract his topic from any background as it is pretty obvious what it is about, it shouldn't be distracted with the well crafted background he was very competant at drawing. Yet, what is really good on this cover is that he let's you make your mind : the weapon pointing guy doesn't have a typical evil grin, the captive's face is off page, you don't see the expresion on the photographer's face, basically, this could be a few very different scenarios, quite opposite ones might I add. All in all a quite interesting composition IMHO, and very good drawing.

OK, I guess the historical accuracy of this one is debatable, but here goes...

From the serious to the silly: They should bring in young James Bowie and young William B. Travis to star with young David Crockett in a back-up called Alamo Babies.

Many people will also resonate with the fact that it's the flip-side of this very famous photo from the era. Hence why it is indeed a cover of historical character instead of just a war story cover Sorry BTW, I thought the photo was so universally famous I didn't need to give the context myself...

Cover text confirms this was the Civil War, not the recent ruckus at the South Carolina capitol.

Heh, I guess I'm just too used to dealing with young people who think the world began when they were born. Your "I thought that was a given" noted.

I had to explain to a 27 year old recently that we didn't have email in 1981...
