I want the smart guy back. "Back"? I didn't leave. He said the smart guy. Not the smart-ass guy.

I didn't really think the Black Widow was a badass until the way Scarlett Johansen portrayed her in the movie. And I've been reading about her since the early 70's.
There I said it.

Both the George Perez Marvel Fanfare story and the Paul Gulacy Bizarre Adventure b&w story (plus his Black Widow portfolio) had me convinced that she was a tough character. I would also add the Marvel team-up sequence, involving Viper and silver Samurai, which also utilized Nick Fury and Shang Chi, as well as the villain, Boomerang. She's been brainwashed in that story, but still proves capable and deadly. The Perez and Gulacy stories treat her very much like Modesty Blaise, the ultimate female adventurer, in my book (though Cathy Gale predates her by about a year, in The Avengers).

I'm not a fan of Johanson as BW: to me she's far too American to pull off that rôle. My suspension of disbelief isn't good enough to see her as a Russian super-spy.

Just had to highlight this as I'm tickled whenever anyone mentions what is probably my favorite multi-part story in MTU. The Black-Widow-with-amnesia story is so awesome - I usually don't buy single back issues (my entire current collection of them fits into a single small box) but - since it's never been reprinted anywhere except in the Essentials volume - I had to get those four issues so I could have the story again in glorious color. And yes, the characterization of Natasha is really done well there; she thinks she's a timid schoolteacher, but when needed, her underlying badassery kicks in and she does what she has to.

'Nigh-indestructible' is such a weird description.
Mjolnir is 'nigh-indestructible'.
Cannonball, while blasting, is 'nigh-indestructible'.
It's like saying that you are this close to being immortal. But as I've always heard, 'close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades'.

But as I've always heard, 'close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades'. It's just one of those lofty Marvelisms. "Nearly indestructible" is clear but not intesting. "Nigh-invulnerable" is overly formal, drawing attention and being memorable. The Tick mocked this Marvel trope, with Arthur describing The Tick also as "nigh-invulnerable" in the tip of the hat to Marvel.

It's much more fun to get the books you need by looking through long boxes at shows than getting them on eBay.
And less expensive.
There I said it.

I agree with more fun... disagree with cheaper though. Maybe at shows (which are rare and regional... I've been to very, very few here in the New England area), but at local stores (of which I've visited probably 200 from my travelling days) are very often quite overpriced, I find. Sometimes you're find good $1 bins, or stuff from the bronze age that's just be sitting a long time and never got repriced, but most often I find you can get lots on ebay very reasonably for what I look for (which are low grade reader copies in large piles)

Of course High grade books are a different animal, but the books that I want are usually 3 dollars or less and many I find for one buck.

I passed on a lot of buck books I already had-there was a Master of Kung Fu 17 (1st issue with that title in a buck box for instance, that if I were interested in being a flipper, I would have snagged and resold for a little profit, but I'd rather someone who wanted it and didn't have it already got it. This show happens 4 times a year. Next weekend, I could go to a Jeff Harper show (same show I met up with the Captain a couple years back and who does other shows out Shax' way) that takes place 4 times a year as well. It's 45 minutes in the opposite direction from me than the show I went to yesterday. The weekend of the 17th there's a big comic book swap meet going on around here and the 24th and 25th is the largest non-Wizard con in the area, Gem City, which will have many of the same dealers as the Harper and Jim & Dan shows. If I expanded down to Cinci (an hour and 15 minute drive) and out towards Akron or Toledo, I could do 30-40 shows a year without exhausting all the options and not leaving the state. If I crossed over into Kentucky or Indiana I could probably do a show every week if I wanted. And all of them have better deals than ebay or the like. I don't know what the New England scenes is like now, but there were several dealers in CT that ran small shows at VFW halls and the like monthly or quarterly when I was living there, and while not as prolific as here, there was a bustling con scene there then. I know some of those dealers have passed away since I was there, not sure if anyone stepped up to fill the void, but thee's been an active con circuit accessible to me if I chose to take part pretty much since I seriously got into comic collecting in high school. I know it's not like that everywhere, and I count myself lucky to have it, but if you can do the show scene you can find a lot better prices on stuff than ebay or most stores. -M

Addendum-this was a conversation I had with a dealer yesterday, about an hour before the show ended...
Me: Oh hey a Thor 337, what;s the grade and what do you have on it? Dealer: It's VF and I have $50 on it. Me: ah. Not a bad price. Better than some I've seen, but I am just about tapped out. Dealer. I'm having a terrible show, I could go lower, what are you thinking... Me:I've only got $25 left in my pocket and I still have to pick up my wife something... Dealer-I'd let it go for $25 if you wanted it...
I ended up passing as I did want to get my wife a print.
But there's deals to be had at shows.
Of course it helps to know people too, I walked over and to Dan's table and talked to him afterwards and told him about the conversation, and he was like, oh I have one about that grade I could let you have for $20 if you are in the market for it, but I want to reread it before I sell it...
so I am probably going to get it from him at Gem City next month. It's one of the few books I had that I regret selling off (along with the rest of the Simonson run and the price of 337 has been my stumbling blok for putting the run back together, but I could do $20 for it with only slightly grimacing).
But you only make relationships like that by going to the shows and meeting and talking to people. Dan is the one I bought my Conan #1 from in 2014 after Jesse introduced us when he knew Dan was selling and I was int he market and we've developed a con friendship then i.e. we only see each other at shows but always take time to tak and catch up when we do. It's part of what makes the hunt fun, meeting the people who share the passion.
