I paid 10 bucks for Tony Isabella's autograph.
Unfortunately, that experience is part of why I believe "them" when they say don't meet your heroes.

I paid 10 bucks for Tony Isabella's autograph. Unfortunately, that experience is part of why I believe "them" when they say don't meet your heroes. Did he tell you all about how he created Black Lightning? Of course he did. I have never met Tony Isabella; but, I have read his comics work and his column in CBG and never had an issue with anything I read in either. I've read interviews and he never came across as a jerk; so, I don't get the animosity, other than the aforementioned bad signing experience. His beef with DC always centered around the contract he had, which gave him certain rights for use in other media, yet he had a falling out with DC editorial and they then blocked any attempt to use that character, even by producers specifically wanting to use the character. Everything I read, from various sources, suggested he had legitimate grievances with DC editorial. Can't speak for interactions at conventions; but, CBG readers seemed to be rather complimentary about experiences; so, maybe it was something going on at the con, that filtered into his attitude, at the time. I don't know; I wasn't there and have no direct interaction to compare. I once observed Mark Gruenwald looking at a portfolio at a con, in Atlanta, and thought he sounded a bit like a jerk, at the time. Over the years, I read nothing but good things about him and when my older self reflected back on what I observed, I realized he was delivering constructive criticism, maybe in a blunt manner; but, by that age, I appreciated someone who spoke directly and honestly. It can be a rare trait.

I once observed Mark Gruenwald looking at a portfolio at a con, in Atlanta, and thought he sounded a bit like a jerk, at the time. Over the years, I read nothing but good things about him Well, Roger Stern would disagree, at least. But yes, most people speak quite well of him. I think that's a fair point. I go back and forth on this because, on the one hand, creators are paid to be at these conventions and to be gracious with the public, so it's just good customer service to be nice. On the other hand, they are human, and we all have bad days at work. Meeting Brent Spiner a decade back killed my desire to ever meet a celebrity again. I've mentioned that to many Star Trek fans and have figured out, through these many discussions, that Spiner is utterly delightful in all circumstances UNLESS a young child is involved. He seems to get awkward around them, and that's probably what happened with me and my young daughter. So I see where @bla is coming from and feel the same, but I also think It's important to offer these folks the benefit of the doubt. If the experience is not a common one, there may have been something else going on. Heck, I worked Neal Adams' table at Wizardworld Cleveland twice, and I could see why some folks thought he was a jerk, but that definitely wasn't his intention. In his mind, he was running a business with no illusions about it, so he'd greet you with a friendly smile and, if you weren't there to buy, he'd make small talk for a moment and then politely expect you to make way for a paying customer. That being said, don't ever give Tom Savini your money. He's been a jerk to far too many of my friends.

Hulk Hogan would be the best celebrity to meet. You could hear his many untruths. He once talked about how he wrestled 400 days a year. Not 400 times, but 400 days. How? Due to travelling between Japan and the United States, the time difference made the 400 days possible.
Of course, us rational folk think that even if you gained a day while crossing the international date line, you’d lose a day when you travelled back the other way. So Hogan was obviously going against the law of physics.
Seriously, though, I am sure he’d be fine to meet.
I met Richard Kiel once. Nice guy, very affable. One can be wary of meeting one’s favourite actors/comic creators, but there are times when it was nice.

Even so, Stern still did a nice tribute to Gruenwald in Avengers Infinity.
Though it is interesting to see how the whole Captain Marvel situation is portrayed online these days with the MCU and all. A few people write the story like a "where are they now black screen with white text" movie scene as if Gruenwald was a total villain while Stern achieves the greatest thing a comic writer can ever hope to achieve haha: To live long enough to see your character appear in the MCU.
(they posted a gif at the end so it is hard to screenshot that, also not the only person to portray it in this manner, simply one example)

Many years ago, Tony Isabella sent a really snarky, mean-spirited reply to an email I'd sent him that had inadvertently offended him, but followed it up with a mellower, more conciliatory response after I apologized. Years later, he wrote a highly complimentary review of my Avengers history in Alter Ego, no doubt never making the connection between writer me and long-ago fanboy me. I've never met him in person, but I'd be happy to get his sigature on a book or two from my collection.
Cei-U! I summon my copy of Astonishing Tales #21!

Post Bronze Age, I think this is most comic book companies' marketing strategy: ^ The story of the late 80s - 90s. Well, throw in holographic and foil-stamped covers for a more complete picture.
