I've bought a few just for the cover. Thought of starting a collection of comics with semi trucks on the cover collection, but gave up after just a couple. Ultimately I buy them to read.

The only comics I ever bought solely for the cover were ones from artists I'm really obsessed with, and even then, it's not an automatic draw. The artists in question are Berni Wrightson (everything up until 1983), Jeff Jones and Sam Kieth (everything up until 2000, after that I only get the interior art and artbooks). With writers, if I like them, I get everything from them, really everything. There's no character I'd follow through a bad story/writer.

A cover could definitely get me to try a book, but it would have to be good to get me to get more than one issue.

I buy quite a bit just based on the cover, actually. Quite a lot of my comic purchasing comes from the two-for-a-buck bins, so I'll grab anything that looks sort of interesting. I've been grabbing golden age books just for the c
My first issue of Reptisaurus was bought just for the cover, and I paid an incredibly amount of money (like 7 bucks) for it. Just something I knew I needed in my life.

I buy quite a bit just based on the cover, actually. While I do buy heaps of new books....I do however wish more of the covers were relevant to what's between the covers. Now we just get 'action poses' or hot looking babes in 'sexy poses' rather than a glimpse of what's going on inside. |

By and and large I've always been a story over art kindve comic fan. As a young kid though I was definitely more interested in and attracted to the art. Until I started really reading and enjoying their stories. Though I can't remember any specific examples, I undoubtedly bought some books as a young reader based solely on their covers. As an adult, I enjoy and appreciate the art etc, but if I'm not into the story I'm not gonna buy. If I'm drawn to the cover / art enough, I'll inquire about the story but only if the story sounds good will I give it a try.
Strangely, back in the day however, I have bought plenty of music based solely on the album cover art.

This is a lot less true of new books - And almost completely not true of Marvel. (DC + Image are a little better. I'm reading the most recent the Snyder Capulo Batman Vol 7. tpb from the library and I'm really impressed with the covers.) |

Thankfully, it's not the cover. I'd be an Alex Ross completionist and I'd have way too many comics I have no desire to read.
The #1 factor in me buying a comic seems to be "did I buy this comic/ like this character (concept) as a kid." Every DC/ Marvel title I buy fits in this category.

What about buying to maintain a run, or because a favorite writer or artist is on the book?
Truthfully, I rarely ever buy a book on its own individual merits. I follow a run until it gives me ample reason to stop. That's pretty much the only way I buy or read anything, new or vintage.

Much more than I ever should've. Thankfully, the one positive thing I can say about the DC and the new52 is that it finally broke me of that. No more buying books out of habit. It's good or its gone. |

I much prefer covers that give some idea what the comic is about, even it makes absolutely no sense (like so many of those Jimmy Olson covers). |

I purchase Comics for their story first and cover second. If the story and cover are great - it's a winner in my book! And, that's rarely happen these days. I prefer a good story over a good cover; in the past it's other away around and now I'm older and a little wiser - I say a good story is hard to beat.

Then there are variant comics which have very attractive covers. This was the Toronto Expo variant to Spidey #666, there were only 1,500 copies available with many dinged so it took a lot of cherry-picking to get the best copies (of which I have 6 which includes one slabbed 9.8). Here's 2 of them. Artwork like these on a favourite character - as well as crazy price for this book, (seen it listed for up to $450) make it a double whammy in my book....  |
