The unfortunate fact is that hard drives tend to deteriorate after five years or so. Like the loss of brain cells, they begin to lose functionality like a cancer.Even the mere act of starting up a computer, scanning for viruses or de-fragging wears the hard-drive down. If your computers over 5 years of age don't spend lots of money trying to fix it. Either get the hard-drive replaced or get a new computer
Also don't upgrade to Windows 10 on an old hard-drive. You'll just speed up it's death cycle
I have a new laptop with Windows 10 and am completely happy with it. I'd never go back

Thanks, Rom and Ish! I've had this computer for 8 years, and it was refurbished when I got it. Are new PCs worth the price compared to refurbished? The guy who worked on mine said a refurbished harddrive brings all it past problems with it. (Of course, I could always use my laptop, though I'm having trouble getting used to it.)

Thanks, Rom and Ish! I've had this computer for 8 years, and it was refurbished when I got it. Are new PCs worth the price compared to refurbished? The guy who worked on mine said a refurbished harddrive brings all it past problems with it. (Of course, I could always use my laptop, though I'm having trouble getting used to it.) An 8 year old computer is like an 80 year old man. If you had the hard-drive replaced with a new one, then you extended it's life (I don't trust that word- refurbished). But then the monitor will sooner or later die. That too has a limited life. Unfortunately, today's electronics are relatively inexpensive but have a planned obsolescence. You're better off biting the bullet and getting a new basic computer for $300 that has Windows 10 included. And as mentioned, download your old programs onto a disc or external drive and export to the new one. I'm speaking from experience as I had a 7 year old laptop last year that was constantly giving me problems and was slow as molasses.Kept sinking in $50 here, $75 there for temp fixes until I finally found an honest geek who gave me a free diagnostic and told me not to pay him for a bandaid solution and just buy a new laptop Oh..Don't spend money for extended warranties. It's not worth it

Will someone PLEASE tell me how to get rid of the mini-windows that appear at the top of my Windows 10 screen? They take up too much space. In for-dummies terms, please.
