This, believe it or not, started out as me liking a single panel from the Gaiman / Romita Eternals. I mean, I liked the whole book but this one panel caught my eye. I made a quick sketch of it for possible future use and within minutes Jet and Betty had grown it into a two page gag - thanks girls!

This is what happens when I avoid working on a strip that is giving me problems at the moment: Go off do something else and come back to the problem refreshed and with an objective eye*. *It still looked like shit. (The other strip not this one.) I was particularly chuffed with the shell cases - which, if you look closely, are in fact AAA batteries. I like the idea that their ray guns eject spent batteries like cartridges from an automatic pistol.)

Painted a copy of a picture from deviantArt (by abstractmusiq to give credit where its due)for my Superobsessed workmate. Would also be worth posting photos of his comicbook sleeves(tatoos), one Marvel(all Kirby) and one DC...anyhoo I digress,,,had to take it to him as soon as I finished, cos I hate it, hate its a copy, hate the face, hate my absotively craptacular painting...but it got into my head and I had to get it on paper.

Wondered if that would happen, but it was all showing when I posted so I thought I was all good. Oh yeah, look up, I fixed it ...I think.

Been busy this week doing some strips that I might actually submit to a couple of places - one of them was done to a brief. So I can't post this week's work until the rejection letters arrive. (There's optimism for you.) So a quickie from my notebook:

Mostly testing the new imagur account since Photobucket went to hell, but in going through the old thumb drives I came across a scan I did of some very rough layouts/storyboards I did when I was doing some editing for a local comic studio. They were short on content for their next anthology issue so I developed a concept for an 8 page story. The artist flaked after doing 1 character concept sketch and my wife was going to step in and do the art, but she is more an illustrator than narrative artist so asked me to break down the pages for her. The studio and I parted ways before the story was ever done though, so these layouts are all that was left of it*. -M *I did find the full script for all 8 pages after I posted the scans, but it never got past the layout phase in terms of getting drawn.

to Paste Pot Paul:
please do not be self-disparaging about your art, and that painting.
i have taught painting.
the problems you perceive in that piece have naught to do with 'you', as an artist.
they stem from the materials you are using, and the fact no one helped you use them properly, and you likely (in NZ) had little or no access to life-drawing classes.
none of this reflects upon you as an artist, as a painter.
