Safety Not Guaranteed is probably my favorite movie on the list so far. Followed by Escape From New York. But I have to say that although I enjoyed it, it's not the type of movie I'd watch twice.

I will definitely be following this thread. I've had Safety not Guaranteed on my Netflix instant for sometime now. Maybe I'll watch it with my girlfriend tonight. I only vaguely remember the concept of having one of those, much less watching movies with same, but my impression is that the film should serve quite well in that role. Mine is screaming in my ear right now about having to take care of her sisters dog..I'm sure you must miss moments like that. But that could be a completely different thread. I think she'll like the movie we are gonna watch it when we get home.

And while I said anything is eligible, I actually do intend to stick literally to the word "fiction" in science fiction.
So no Apollo 13, Right Stuff, or Awakenings.

95. WarGames (Badham, 1983)
Would you like to play a game?
A fun-for-the-family movie, but with several ideas worth considering.
While we assume the Defense Department is harder to hack into these days, the fear that a kid on the internet could go searching for a game and find something dangerous has gone from science fiction to a legitimate concern of all parents. The movie also serves as a cautionary tale for an increasing reliance on automation, and the importance of a manual override. In 1983, this was a legitimate fear. There is a famous story of a heroic Russian engineer who prevented World War III by ignoring his malfunctioning computer readings which told him the US had launched a nuclear missle toward Russia. You always need a failsafe.
And the story of course takes us from a child who thinks he's playing a game accidentally controlling a nuclear arsenal to a computer that has gained self awareness.

Great movie. Would make my top 100 as well but not before Spider-man and Escape from New York.

I haven't seen that movie in years, not since I was a little kid. It had completely escaped my memory until reading that post. I'm going to rent it.

I do know Terminator 1 & 2 are in my Top 2 and 3 (Rise of the Machines) is somewhere in the Top 20. Salvation was a bit...boring at times but had some redeeming moments, especially with these... As you may have figured...Terminator is my favourite sci-fi franchise and I can't wait for the new one next year....

I couldn't finish the third one and never bothered with the fourth. I probably won't give the fifth a chance either. I do like the first two though, even though they seem to have completely different feels to them. I consider the first one more of a suspense thriller. Two humans against an unstoppable killing machine. Bullets don't hurt it and it never gives up. It's like a survival horror. The second one has an unstoppable killer as a good guy and an unstoppable killer as a bad guy. Lots of explosions. GNR soundtrack. Hand held gatling gun. Rocket launcher. It was a flat out action movie, with only a few nods to the suspense thriller feel of the first one. Still a great movie though.

As I said before, this list will have no sequels. But Terminator 2 was the sequel closest to making it. It is more of an action blockbuster, but a great one.
Aliens and Spider-Man 2 were also strongly considered.

Terminator 2 is the only one of the franchise I've seen; one of those dimly remembered girlfriends had liked the first one & wanted to see the second one when it was new. Pretty decent, though the fact that I haven't felt stirred to go back & see the first one tells me I must not've been blown away. Still, I think I'll add it to my Netflix queue.
Didn't realize till now, upon looking it up on Netflix, that the better part of a decade passed between the first & second films.

I'm was a fan of the Terminator as a kid but I lost a lot of respect for James Cameron after watching The Outer Limits episodes Demon with a Glass Hand and Soldier.
The third film isn't very good but the ending does finally give us Armageddon. Basically the movie just copies the formula from T2 and tries to recreate each scenario in a bigger way. I think that's mainly where it fails.
I'm really looking forward to Matt Smith in the next movie though.

I've never seen them, but do you think Harlan Ellison was justified in suing James Cameron? I believe he was awarded 'damages'. I liked part 3...I was always hoping there'd be a Terminatrix since the mid 90s.

Soldier wasn't very good but Demon with a Glass Hand is brilliant and one of my favorite episodes from the series. Ellison goes into detail about the situation in the documentary Dreams with Sharp Teeth. I can't remember what monetary restitution he received but I know the films now have acknowledgments in the credits. What did you think about The Sarah Connor Chronicles? For the most part I enjoyed the series especially Shirley Manson as a T-1001 but I was confused by the ending of the season 2. I'm guessing it wasn't meant as a series finale and the show was cancelled without a proper resolution. They did manage to give the FBI Agent character the last name Ellison though.

I loved TSCC and was hoping Fox wouldn't cancel it. The concept of Cromartie rebuilding himself after reclaiming his head was awesome...so was his demise (lousy Tijuana soundtrack tho lol)...
