Those are the very first comics I can clearly remember reading.

All those huge Treasury sized specials like Superman vs Spider-Man...
I kept looking at the ads for this when I was small but the price in the 90s Mile High Catalogue was insanely high although I still nearly ordered it several times. I was so glad when I finally got it...and the irony, it was during one of the 'recession' times in the USA around 2010-11 or so when lots of books were being 'dumped' for cheap and I got a NM copy for the insane price of $15.50. Chuck wanted $250. I now own 3 original copies. My dealer wasn't so lucky, as soon as he took his treasury out of the priority mail box, the cover fell off.

I never found a way to store them that kept them in good condition. I sold all mine back in 1992....needed money to buy my house. I did buy the reprints later but I really miss the oversized art of the originals.

I read this until the cover fell off, and then I read it until pages started falling out. at this point, I own probably 8 copies of it, as it's one I ALWAYS grab if i see it priced reasonably, and sit down immediately to read it. (yes, the Metal Men very often died in their stories -- it was the gimmick of the series) . . .but this one, with Tina sacrificing herself to save the day? That image of Doc cradling her severed head just GOT me.

I was only 7-years-old when 1979 turned into 1980, so most of the memorable comics from my childhood were purchased after that. However, I do have very strong recollections of my parents buying me the following two pre-1980 issues of Star Wars Weekly... I was bought lots of other issues of Star Wars Weekly in 1978 and 1979, but the two above are especially memorable because they were my first. I also had some superhero comics as well in the late '70s, like the Marvel and DC digest-sized UK Pocket Books, but I can't recall exactly which issues I had. My memory of what comics I bought or was bought as a kid only gets really clear once we get into '80s.

I started reading Star Wars Weekly with #1, and I still have most of my original collection, though many are now coverless and some have holes punched in them from where my eight year old self kept them in a ring binder.

That's pretty cool that you were buying the series from the start. I was so young in early 1978 (I would've been 5) that I couldn't even properly read those Star Wars comics pictured above. I just looked at the pictures and tried to read them, best I could, but mostly had to get my Mum to read 'em to me. ...and my ol' Mum hated anything even remotely sci-fi.

I would have been eight when SWW started. By that time, I was already not only a heavy reader but a collector, of sorts (the first titles I actually actively collected were 2000 AD, Star-Lord, Captain Britain, Mighty World of Marvel, The Complete Fantastic Four and Super Spider-Man, all starting in about 1976 or 1977). My grandmother basically taught me to read with comics, starting when I was about three or four. Comics are the perfect introduction to reading for a young kid, I think.
