Comics are still awesome as long as you buy the ones you enjoy reading instead of simply continuing to buy the ones featuring characters that appeared in comics you enjoyed several decades ago.
My favorite comics these days are reprints, but the availability, quality, and affordability of reprints is a big part of the fun of modern comics. They are a source of fun I wouldn't have been able to enjoy 20 years ago because at the time reprints were uncommon and typically not terribly affordable, being floppies with modern price tags instead of hardbound volumes with hundreds of pages for a fraction of the cost of the same content in modern floppy price points. Also, a reprint series lasting more than six issues or so would be a great success. Now we have dozens of volumes collecting complete series and runs.

For me, they are not as much fun as they used to be. This is probably the correct answer. And would have been the correct answer to the same question in 1985, 1965 and will be the correct answer in 2045. (Although maybe not 1978. The correct answer in 1978 was "No, comics are no longer fun. Stupid DC Implosion.") The cancelation of The Secret Society of Super-Villains in the middle of the story was the greatest tragedy of my comic-collecting existence. I still haven't gotten over it. The SSOSV hardcover from a few years ago reprinted some of the art that was never published. And it also reprinted the JLA three-parter that wrapped up the fate of the Wizard, Star Sapphire, the Floronic Man, Blockbuster and Professor Zoom (which I didn't see in the 1970s because I never read Justice League.) But it only eases the pain a little.

Oh definitely. I started to buy my own comics more earnestly in the mid 90s when I was still a pre-teen...but didn't like 90s Spidey at all...and it was hard to keep up with X-Men books which were being published like confetti. So as much as I liked their 60s-80s books, I simply left the 90s comics alone, and didn't pick up a copy of X-Men till I saw the Jusko cover for #375 (around 1999 or so ).

Though I read SSOSV #1 to #15 every so often, I've only read that JLA three-parter once ... and the main thing I remember is Zatanna's awful awful costume. So what is it? I'm on the edge of my seat ...

The price point for comics has sucked a lot of the fun away Bah. There's nothing like taking out a 3 year fixed interest loan to buy the newest Squirrel Girl. That's the kind of fun we never had in the old days.

I was all about X-Men and Spiderman in the early 90's. The stuff doesn't hold up looking at it as an adult, but I do get nostalgic seeing the covers. It was difficult getting rid of my UXM collection even knowing it just took up space and I'd never read any of it again.

Am I just an old man who misses .25 comics on a spinner rack? We all miss cheaper comics, but they're still very much fun for me.

There are a lot of great comics out there. And there are some that are a lot of fun. For the most part, however, they don't correspond with Big Two Super-hero books.
So the answer is...Comics can be fun. Super-hero comics...not so much. Big Two Super-hero comics...yeah...not really in years. And there are probably exceptions to that rule. I hear Squirrel Girl is fun.

I gave up on comics after DC's Crisis. At the time I was in college and had to make cuts in my budget. For the most part I went along with the single universe theme though it meant saying goodbye to my beloved Earth-Two. I bought the occasional comic, and Marvel was still simpler to follow. Then came the crossovers, so it was impossible to follow one comic. And multiple covers. DC said getting rid off Earth-Two and its doppelgangers of the prime universe characters was too confusing but then came a whole slew of "legacy" characters with so many suffixes to their name one had to brush up on Roman numerology. Soon comics disappeared from the local grocery stores, etc. The comics code -- whether good or evil -- was gone. Comics became more violent, dark and gritty. And don't forget the reboots! The term "comic book" became an oxymoron. A few years ago, DC announced 52, and started all over. And now DC announces Rebirth. Still not sure what that's going to be. Anyway, to get to the point, are comics still fun? Am I just an old man who misses .25 comics on a spinner rack? The days of letter columns. The smell of newsprint. Editor's notes. Actual comic panels. Or did I just answer my own question. It sounds like you answered your own question... Comics are no longer fun... For you. It depends on your definition and context. But If those aspects you mentioned are what made them fun in your opinion, and they're now gone, then no they're no longer fun. If by fun you mean funny / humorous, light hearted, safe simple, etc. then they're fewer but still around. Just no longer cheap or widely or conveniently available. For its a yes and a no. Yes they are still fun. If for no other reason than in still interested and wanting to continue the hobby and enjoy when I can. But also no because there's so little that appeals to me now days. I'm at a miserable point where my desire is at at all time high, but so is my dislike and distaste of what's being produced. dor me, "fun" is in the format, the content, and the quality of both. Comics are fun but the content isn't what i would like.

The modern, mainstream superhero comics from Marvel and DC?
Hell no...they're a chore, if anything.
But as others have said, companies like Image and Darkhorse still put out good stuff, mostly outside of the superhero genre.

Yes. I just finished reading the Titans series from 1-50. It had everything including a story where Jesses Quick had an affair with her mothers boyfriend.
Read the older stuff, it' better.

Even if you don't enjoy currently published comics, it's not as if there's a shortage of reading material out there. Especially for folks here who enjoy classic comics, the problem seems to be finding the time to read the stacks and stacks of unread back issues rather than finding something good to read.
