I want to like the above post twice, Roquefort Raider. Unsurprisingly, I agree with absolutely everything you're saying here...and I'm only slightly annoyed that you make your point more eloquently than I do.

No need to prolong this, but I'm not referring to overly sensitive types who are "offended" by everything. I know of no Vikings who are up in arms about teams named for them; nor should they be if they are. There's nothing pejorative about the term. But there is something fundamentally disrespectful about Redskins, and to say that protesting the one is the same as protesting the other is being obtuse. Sorry, but I think we do bear responsibility for trying to correct injustices done in the past if only because our society continues to suffer as a result. That's why all of the elements of society -- education, government, law enforcement, the economy, and so on -- must be dedicated to eliminating the "racism, bigotry, fanaticism, selfishness, [and] greed" that Roquefort Raider refers to as society's greatest ills. And, no, Confessor, not by wearing sackcloth, giving away all possessions and bemoaning past sins, but by facing the past directly, accepting the unfairness that human beings have added to the unfairness that is always going to be a staple of existence, and doing what we can and should as a commonwealth to right past wrongs. It's way to easy to play the Hobbes card when all the other cards are in your side of the table.

When push comes to shove it's not that hard to not be an asshole when it comes to other people and other cultures. It's not "political correctness." It's human decency. I'm not pointing fingers here, but one only need look as far as the Toddler-in-Chief and his sycophants to see the classic bully behavior of "It's free speech and I'm telling it like it is when I say it, but I'm going to whine and piss and moan like a five year old with a skinned knee when someone says that to me."
And yes this is a bit afield from cultural appropriation but it's related because nobody has a burning need to wear, for example, a traditional Lakota war bonnet. And dismissing offense at doing so is simply ignoring a history of hundreds of years of genocide, children being taken from their homes and put in boarding schools where they were forced away from their culture and suppression of native languages and cultures.
If you start on third base you don't get to claim you hit a triple and then complain about the people who actually had to run their ass off to beat a grounder out to first.

Man I’m gone for a while and y’all get into some deep thinking. One of the best things about being a member of this forum.
Also after reading your posts on music in history Confessor; so knowledgeable and well written I guess I should let go of my grudge that Bucky O’Hare isn’t your avatar. It’s time I put my pettinesss to bed. ;-)

This might all belong in the political thread.

This might all belong in the political thread. That crossed my mind too, but the discussion spun out of a "There! I said it"-style post by Duragizer. So, all things considered, I think it's OK staying here, at least as things stand currently.

I'm always reluctant to share a link that may involve at least ten minutes' worth of reading, but I feel this is worth a read: www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/04/13/how-dream-cheap-streaming-television-became-pricey-complicated-messI particularly agree with these comments: I do prefer the "old days". Yes, there were channels on my satellite package that I did not watch (Sky One was one of them, WWF programming aside), but at least everything was there. I subscribe to Netflix. My income fluctuates so Netflix and the WWE Network are all I can afford right now. Which is fine. I can't afford to add Amazon Prime, Disney, DC, etc. Where will it all end? This Balkanization of streaming services is gonna cost a fortune.

I'd said it before and I'll say it again, the Balkanization of streaming content just drives people to illegal means of getting the content, be it torrenting or illegal streaming sites. I'm not saying it's right. I'm just saying that that is what is going to happen.

They still come over to watch certain shows on cable that they can not see without subscribing to even more streaming services. I also have no desire to try streaming services beyond Netflix (which comes with my cable service) since most of them I would be paying to watch only one or two shows that I would be interested in.

On a related note I keep seeing articles to "get rid" of my DVD's. After all you can "stream almost anything". Um...NO.
For example Star Trek Discovery. To watch this I would have to pay $6/month or $72/year. Granted there are other stuff on CBS All Access but most of those shows I can watch elsewhere. To get one season of ST: Discovery is $22. I just saved $50 to watch the show I wanted to see.

Who knows? I'll check soon. But at least a DVD collection isn't going anywhere unless you sell it/throw it out.

Because of my upcoming vacation in London and all that; and my Summers being busy with the Club that I run; I'm seriously thinking of limiting my time here and not visit that often. I'm not enjoying it anymore and constantly feeling corrected upon and stepped on occasionally.
And, I'm not going to change my avatar again.
