I'm just about through interacting with the internet in general besides this forum. I come here, share boards on Pintrest with my wife and a few friends and that's about all the internet I can take. Now if there was just someway to ignore the majority of humanity in life. (Man this epidemic is really bringing out the worst in a lot of people.) There I said it. That will be my retirement in the hills of Colorado far away from daily doses of human contact. Much prefer talking to and visiting with the wildlife in the woods and a monthly 45 minute drive to town for necessities. Rest of the time with music, movies, books and comics while checking in here with the rest of you CCF walker and rocking chair squad members.

Twitter is a place where people go to yell and try to destroy each other. The only reason I still check in is that you get news faster than anyplace else. Facebook is way too political and the US is divided really badly. I'm afraid it will turn into a civil war with actual militias. That's why it's vitally important that we keep politics out of this forum. There are still members here that continue to slide in little comments.
Please everyone, those comments are cancer to a forum.

I plan on building a small house on 4 acres I own in the mountains in western PA. Will use it to escape to in retirement to get away from the busier pace of life here in central PA.

There used to be 'Manufacturing Consent', now what we get is 'Manufacturing Outrage'. Everyone gets a button pushed sometime. I honestly don't always know what the latest group labels are though... edgelords? I can only guess. I thought we were the culture of the individual... less about group identity (other than a shared dislike of King George's taxation without representation or an official state religion).
I guess even comics fans are subdivided... you have the condition fixated investor... the completist alternate cover sort... the keeper-uppers of the newest and most current... the only comics from before such and such a year brigade... the last of the red hot the bigger the muscles, guns and boobs hangers-ons... and readers who actually like a solid comic story period... somewhere there's one last hold out for E.C.s, only E.C.s.
I am coming to see that anything in current events touching on politics here is probably going to just be too easily negative vents and then dated.

Increasingly, I find that social media platforms just make me disappointed in the people I know.
I'm not bothered about those who have different political opinions to mine (within reason), that's just life. No, it's the people who you thought were entirely reasonable individuals who spout dumb-ass racist rhetoric; or promote crazy conspiracy theories; or load every post with subtext about how "right on" and virtuous they are; or those who use every post to sanctimoniously lecture everyone else on how they should be living their lives or how they should be reacting to whatever the burning issue of the day is (like anyone gives a rat's arse what they think); or those with so little to say that they just endlessly post wishy-washy New Age inspirational quotes (superimposed over a picture of a rainbow, of course), with "wise" advice, which they themselves routinely ignore; or the person (usually a woman) who posts some attention-seeking, enigmatic statement like, "Ever feel like you just can't carry on much longer?", which is followed by someone asking "what's up, hun?", prompting the OP's intensely annoying response of "I've DM'd you x"; or those (usually men) who just post other people's funny memes and jokes, in lieu of having a sense of humour or a personality of their own.
I miss the old days when you didn't have to know how many dickheads you were friends with.

I miss the old days when you didn't have to know how many dickheads you were friends with. You sound exactly like my wife here. She had a FB account that she initially used to keep in touch with her family (she has cousins in somewhere around 15 or so different states). She also added an Instagram account so she could keep an eye on what our older daughter is doing on there. Over time, her circle grew to include HS acquaintances (never really friends), folks from church, neighbors, etc., and that is when things went south. She found out our former pastor's husband and another man from our former church (both of whom are good friends with my father, no surprise) are virulently anti-Muslim. A member of our current church has posted that if Democrats take over all three branches of the government this fall, it is only a matter of time before they start shutting down Christian churches and/or shooting Christians who profess faith in public. One of her cousins posted last week that one of the most-inspiring moments of her ENTIRE life (and she's 62, with two children and at least two grandchildren) was seeing a certain someone holding up a Bible in front of a church. The mother of a friend from high school has made some incredibly offensive racist statements. A current friend of hers is one of those women you described, always speaking in riddles to draw attention to her drama. She has pretty much given up on it entirely. People will text her asking if she got the message they sent her through FB Messenger, and they'll be shocked when she tells them she hasn't been on in months. Social media gives people a way to write things they would probably never say to another human in real life, because there are no virtually zero repercussions. Hiding behind a keyboard, furiously typing away whatever horrible things come to mind, is easy, and it also supports mob mentality and echo chambers. I'm about to dump LinkedIn, which is the only "big name" platform I use, as it has become "FB for professionals". I'll hang here with you guys and gals, where it is far more sane.

My experience on FB is similar. Reluctantly enrolled to keep up with family in different countries. Then found my friend list kept growing. Originally I would accept them and then later I would delete them. Now I just learned to put a lot on ignore.

The biggest appeal of social media is that the traditional barriers to access and visibility have been removed, so anyone can have a platform for their views. The biggest negative of social media is that the traditional barriers to access and visibility have been removed, so anyone can have a platform for their views.
Yes, the amount of racism, both intentional and through ignorance/privilege, that I have seen espoused by my extended social circle has been very disheartening. Then again, I've also learned how many of my friends and acquaintances have no time for that shit. It's also made it a lot easier to trim the fat on my contact lists.
I'm reluctant to totally give up Facebook at this time mostly because it's the only way I know of to easily stay in touch with a lot of my extended family and friends and for sharing photos. If there were another better platform we could all move to, I'd be all about it.

Facebook was pretty much the only way to keep in touch with my son when he was in West Africa. But he's back now.
I actually use it more to keep in touch with old CBR friends than family. I've booted large swathes of my family because their political positions disgust me and, other than an accident of birth, I'd never associate with them anyway.

I have an inclination to lecture everyone I find extreme in the virtues of moderation and Bob Dobbs' "give slack, get slack" philosophy. I'd never go for any kind of absolutist true believer perfectionist vision, I'm all about let's aim for tolerable, hopefully sustainable, we can compromise some, a bit of this and a bit of that, you can have some guns, these people get to smoke your basic weed, the mail and buses keep working... just doesn't really fit on a sign or hat! Luckily I've never done facebook or twitter, looked in a few times and I guess it didn't really appeal (and I heard they sell your info, that's how it can be 'free'). I used to get bugged a lot more to sign up by people on them but I think I'm safe at this point. BF was on facebook but under his stage/recording name and they forced him off during some big 'real names' push, he didn't resist much.

Oy! You kids and your newfangled internet social platforms! I tell ya, in my day if you wanted social connections you had to actually call up on the phone or talk to somebody in person or get arthritis writing and mailing a letter then waiting weeks for the response. And platforms? That was for girls and glam rockers wearing to make em taller! Sheesh...this texting, instant messaging, tweets (dat's what the birds do don't ya know?) and face book (why I oughta hit youse palooka's in the face with a book and get your attention) stuff is making me lose my pastrami sammich I had for lunch!

In my day we didn't have any of this fancy gravity... the world revolves for kids these days, but we had to hold on to something if we wanted to stay on the Earth. And oxygen... it never just came to you like it does now, no, you had to chase it down and shove it into your lungs to breathe!

I wonder... does the cell phone generation still do that thing where the two lovebirds go "no, YOU hang up first" and stay on the phone for an extra hour?
Since they're constantly texting anyway, there doesn't seem to be much point...

I set up a facebook page, under my IMDB screen name, to see comments on my lists and respond to some; but, only went on it less than a half dozen times and haven't been back since. They keep bombarding my e-mail account with pleas to come on back; but, I mass delete them.
I had no desire to share my entire personal life with the world. I never figured anyone cared, outside of a small circle and I had no desire to hear what they had for dinner last night, with pictures and "likes". My whole outlook on the entity was covered on the IT Crowd...
I just wish they had destroyed the Internet, sometimes....
(for those who haven't seen it. Roy & Moss are the IT techs, who are socially awkward. jen is their boss, who padded her resume, knows squat about computers, but got put in charge of the departnemtn. She found her niche, dealing with the people, while Roy and Moss fix the computers. In this episode, Jen has to make a speech about the IT department and their work. Roy & Moss are ticked off about her attitude and con her into believing a little black box, with a blinking red light is "The Internet."

When I first heard the term "tweeting", I said to myself that I don't care what it's about, a grown man should never engage in any activity termed "tweeting". And then when I learned what it was, it turned out that my knee-jerk prejudice was right on the money.
