Harley Quinn as a member of the Suicide Squad makes no sense, and that's stacked on top of the heighted reality that is comic books. She adds no value to the team. Change my mind.
Harley Quinn makes no sense to me, full stop.
I don't know the Suicide Squad, in comics or movies, but it sounds like they should have had one story and then, the end because suicide squad. It would be like the guys who come to "rescue" Brian in Python's Life of Brian.

I dunno, I've read my fair share of decent Harley Quinn comics. The Seattle Public Library had tons of graphic novels available to check out, so I read a bunch of her comics and while I never bought any she did have more than her fair share of solid comics.

I don't mean her monetary value. She sells, so she'll be pigeonholed into various narratives. I'm just saying from a storytelling standpoint, it's hard to justify why Amanda Waller would put someone like Harley on the squad. She has no special powers, isn't a train solider, is a nutcase, and would just serve as a liability more so than an advantage. Sometimes she legit just has a mallet or a baseball bat, and is supposed to be a threat. Just no.

I'd have to go back and reread the comics to argue with you, but since I don't own them I'll just re-iterate my point - I liked what I read. With fiction anything is possible. Is she over used? yep. But so is Batman, and he has no special powers either. Imagination is wonderful!

She adds more copies sold because of her popularity. It's like Wolverine guest starring in various titles in the 90's. or the endless Marvel Team-Ups where Spiderman met every single character in the Marvel universe for 15 seconds.

Harley is incredibly smart, a capable fighter and constantly underestimated.
The whole point of the Suicide Squad was to use the incarcerated metas/villains to do dirty work that could easily be denied, especially with the in head bombs. Harley lasted a lot longer because she’s actually good at the missions.

Batman is a skilled martial artist, ninja, detective, near genius, etc. He has skills applicable to taking someone out. Quinn is legit just a crazy person in goth. But she'll take out armed soldiers with a bat. I'm not saying she can't be in good stories. I'm saying her role on the Suicide Squad in particular comes with a caveat that even in comic book world is a hard sell, can't be hand-waved away. Why does Amanda recruit her compared to some other metahuman she could have had her pick from that isn't a nutcase? And yeah Batman has stupid plot armor sometimes, but that doesn't mean Harley's isn't equally nutty if not more so.

Why can she take out several armed soldiers with a baseball bat or mallet?

Harley is so far from her origin, at this point, from overuse that no plot made around her would surprise me. Much like Deadpool.

Harley Quinn is supposed to be a very intelligent doctor who went insane, so she is really smart. I don't know why or how she became such a great fighter. I mostly know her from Batman The Animated Series and the Arkham Aslyum games in any case.

Harley is nearly invincible thanks to some serum(?) from Ivy. She also has a lot more weapons in her arsenal than just a bat and a mallet. I don't know that any explanation has been given for her fighting prowess, but I assumed she was trained by Joker (directly or indirectly). I admittedly don't think too much about it making sense, though, as I love the character.
I think her appeal to Waller is her high intelligence, invulnerability and (unexplained) fighting prowess. I also don't buy that Waller has her pick of the metahuman litter, as the Squad isn't exactly packed with A-listers.

As I posted in the Things Historical thread, it is the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Chosin Resevoir, wherethe US Marines and Army were encircled by 120,000 Chinese troops, fought a desperate battle in freezing cold and snow, then broke through the Chinese lines to execute a fighting retreat to Hungnam Harbor, where they and 14,000 civilians were extracted.
Little did I know that I would spend the day commemorating that event at work, after a fashion. I work for a printing and shipping company and we have been doing Christmas-levels of shipping since Covid took hold. Now we are doing holiday stuff on top of that. We ended up with 2 people calling off, leaving myself and two others to handle everything. When I got there, the other two had been in shipping since they arrived and we opened the store, with brief moments printing. So, we spent the day, outnumbered and tired, fighting an overwhelming force, until we could escape.
There was a bit less blood, though.
Semper Fi! And pass the packing tape.......
