The Captain: When I was a kid, I didn't care about diversity, all that mattered was reading my favorite comics and favorite superheroes. As for Sam Wilson, he was his own man, his own hero when he was the Falcon, he didn't need to become Cap, and yeah, I do see this diversity push as nothing more than publicity stunts: Black Cap, She-Thor, Asian Hulk, etc, etc. If there's such a crying need for diversity then create new characters, don't steal away characters I grew up with and love. That's all I ask. At least DC hasn't screwed around with their legacy characters like Marvel has done.
Phil Maurice: Well, I turn 58 today, so yeah, I guess I'm having a "Get off my lawn!" moment with the diversity issue.

The trouble with creating new characters, is that they very rarely stick with buyers in the same way the 60s characters do. In Marvel world, the only individual characters I can think of who have been created since the 60s who have managed to hold down their own series reliably over a significant time are Wolverine and Deadpool; Luke Cage has off and on, Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel is just about doing so now; Kamala Khan/Ms Marvel is doing so now.
So, I guess the idea of using an established brand ("Hulk", "Thor", "Captain America") and gender / race / sexuality changing them is an attractive way of getting away from the lilywhite male world that existed before, at less risk of the series bombing. I don't like it much, I'd rather have new characters as well, but ultimately it comes down to whether the series is well-written - she-Thor has been really good, Captain Samerica hasn't, and neither has Amadeus Hulk. The race-bending of Nick Fury to match the films was just utterly stupid - recent uses of the character have just ignored the idiotic back-story and just treated him as the old experienced Fury.

I don't self insert myself into fiction, so a character's opinions, race, gender, sexual orientation don't matter to me. I like a character for who it is, not so much "I could be that character". So the diversity thing I am pretty apathetic about. Just write good stories with great art and I will consume it. If anything else attracts me to comics outside the story it's women. Sexy women. Because I am a perpetual horny 16 year old, even at almost 40.

I have totally divorced comics from movies and never get angry when it's not the same. The movies have actually improved some things. I like Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury and I never liked the comic version. I grew up reading the traditional Nick Fury of the comics and still prefer that version but no, I don't get too upset about the changes for the movies. I'm not sure it's even possible to stay true to the comic book version of these characters, because it seems to me when they try to do it - for example casting beefy blonde guys as Captain America or Thor - the result is almost as jarring to me as the Samuel Jackson Fury. The faces don't look right, the voices don't sound right, nothing is as it should be - because the comics are idealised human symbols visualised for us by professional artists rather than actual human beings. I was serious about Daniel Craig, though, believe it or not - I really do think they should have died his hair black for the role of Bond.

Going off on an entirely different tangent, even though I love classic rock music, especially British Invasion bands, I could never get into Led Zeppelin, no matter how hard I tried. That band just plain never moved the needle for me. There, I said it!

The old Roger Moore didn't have black hair either and I'm certain it wasn't held against him. Craig's hair didn't bother me and I was impressed with Casino Royale. SPECTRE was a damp squib though.

Love British invasion bands, especially from the 80s, but being British born makes me biased.
Owner of a Lonely Heart by YES would be one of my favourite tracks from the 80s. On every compilation I've ever made, it's always preceeded by Cum On Feel The Noise and followed by Talking In Your Sleep.

I'll be seeing them live in March at the Agua Caliente for around my 25th time. Have all the official singles, albums, most of the bootlegs. Safe to say they're my favourite band.

No, and it isn't held against Daniel Craig either, I wouldn't say. I don't think I've seen a single person share my personal view on this one. But even I don't hold it against him, or anyone else for that matter - I'm just saying what I would prefer.

Love prizes. Shopping at a local mall and filling in an entry form won me 2 tickets to Disneyland, accomodation and $1000 spending money. It was 2nd prize. But those new shoes for my daughter certainly paid for themselves Trying to work it out now, a quick 5 day trip and 2 extra tix.
