I can see self-driving cars being very handy for senior citizens who can't, or shouldn't, drive themselves. That said, elderly people are the most fearful of new technology, so I'm not sure if robot cars and old people are a wise combination.

"The robot stepped on the gas instead of the brake."

Who pays the insurance? The Robot is the driver.

Who pays the insurance? The Robot is the driver. This is what I don't get about self-driving cars as well. The insuring of said vehicle is such a legal minefield, that I question whether any insurance company would insure a self-driving car. I mean, if something goes wrong with the car and it kills someone, legally speaking, where does the blame lay? It's not the passenger's fault, obviously, so is it the company who manufactured the vehicle? Or maybe the company who manufactured the component inside the car that failed and caused the accident? Or is it the company who designed that specific component? Or maybe the small team who designed it? If it's not an intrinsic design fault in that component, then maybe it was the guy on the production line who put that specific component together? But chances are it would've been assembled by a robot or machine, so again, who's to blame in that case? To me, the insurance and liability questions associated with self-driving cars is the single biggest hurdle facing their use in every day life. While a human is at the controls of a car, apportioning blame for accidents is relatively easy. Take that out of the equation though and you're on some pretty tricky ground legally, I would think.

I listen to Joe Rogan's and Sam Harris' podcasts frequently and they tend to bring ups self-driving cars a lot. One fact brought up is that the most common job for males in the United States is some form of driving-based vocation. Obviously self-driving cars and trucks are going to eventually put cab drivers and truck drivers our of business.

The car started shouting "die, human scum! The machine revolution has begun!"

And a few minutes before this photograph was taken, after being refused service, it said "I'll be back!"

Yeah, I don't see why anyone would even trust a self driving car. The human race is getting more and more lazy and this is how Machines took over in the Terminator movies. I don't see how anyone would NOT want a self-driving car... I'd much rather let the car drive and read comics that have to pay attention to the road!

The unfortunate thing is; even without them, there are still plenty of Americans who would rather do, god knows anything, rather than pay attention to the road. Not that I'm accusing you of that buddy. :-)

Not a fan of self driving cars. I don't like giving up things I can control (or least the illusion of control!) to someone/something else. I'm one of those guys that misses manual transmissions.

I guess a lot of that depends on whether you see driving as a necessary chore in order to get from A to B, or as something that is enjoyable in and of itself. I'm definitely in the latter camp. I really enjoy driving most of the time and particularly late at night when the roads are fairly empty.

I hope I never have a car without a manual transmission! I also dislike electric windows, ABS brakes and anti-skidding mechanisms. And I loathe smart keys and opening lockless doors or trunks with a remote. 300 bucks to replace a defective key? For crying out loud!!! Basically, I want a 1995 Hyundai Accent. Only, not rusted to hell.

I'd like the option to switch back and forth between manual and self-driving modes. I'm not sure a car that is single-function (self-driving) is a good idea until the technology is perfected. Still, I could see the benefits of self-driving on really long road trips through beautiful scenery. The driver always misses the good stuff.
