I love that! Bear facts as well as Larry Gonick could give them!

That's it! The last two pages of The Orion Arm, book III! Double page spread, 28 x 17 inches, full bleed. The text will be added separately, and I may lose a good part of the art, but what can one do? On to the front and back covers, now. With a 79-page story and a few text pages, I figure the book will be 84 pages. I'll have to start looking for a good printer, as the digital printing of the first two books was disappointing. Offset is too expensive for such a small print run, but I heard that inkjet printing was also a possibility. I'd need thick paper for that, as I have a LOT of black backgrounds! Man, page 1 was finished back in 2007. It took 13 years and change to get this one done... If I keep the same pace (and I can't see how it could change), I'll be 70 years old when I finally finish the series! (But come to think of it, I'll be retired before that... and that should accelerate things!)

Now that the last page is done, I'm busy preparing the files for the printer. I have to go over the first 20 pages or so, which were scanned at 300 dpi (the maximum printing resolution) and rescan them at 600 dpi; apparently this may lead to better results later on. I'll also clean up the pages wherever lead pencil is still visible. Something else that has to be done is translate the whole thing, and I'm already on page 10 (out of 79). One thing I knew I'd have to work on eventually was modify the Will Eisner-inspired title page, something that took far longer than I had expected! French version : The title in the English version : Can you imagine the face of the engineers when someone says, after the space station is built, "there's a typo, there"?

Can you imagine the face of the engineers when someone says, after the space station is built, "there's a typo, there"? I'm thinking more of the space teens who hold up a giant "S" at the end of the English version. Seriously, that is one spectacular title page!

Testing things for the cover... The emperor looks a bit flat. I'll have to play with the light a little.

Lovely work! And don't worry about time. Retirement comes fast. Jokes aside: kudos. Very demanding pages.

Phew! At long last, Le bal de L'empereur has been sent to the printer!
I was told that the digital presses are not limited to a 300 dpi resolution anymore, which should solve the pixellation problem that so bothered me with the previous books.

It's finally here!!! I was scared to open those crates... what if the ink was grey like the first time, what if the digital printing had pixellated everything the way it's not supposed to? But the result is pretty darn satisfying. It's a big hefty book at 88 pages despite its softcover, and the three volumes side by side finally show what I was going for with the series design!

I've been sitting on my digital preview like a loser for weeks now, and yet I'm still THRILLED to finally sit down and read it all, from beginning to end. I just need to budget my time better! So where is the link to purchase the print copy?

Captain Chang, a character heard but not seen in Book 3, will play a major role in The Fall of the Empire.
Coming your way in...urrr... as fast as I can manage!
