It was the late 80's, I was TOTALLY into anything ninja and samurai related. And I liked funny animal comics. I saw it on the stand and grabbed it. Issue #16 was the first one I picked up, but I wasn't a regular reader by any means. I followed so many comics and only had $20 a month to spend, so I usually impulse bought whatever was on the stands when I arrived, if I wasn't in the mood to loot the bargain bins instead. #24 was the second issue I bought, but some time around there I decided to start buying all the copies the shop had in the back issue bins. I remember buying #1 for $6 back in 1991 or so, I was so happy to have found it.

I...I don't know what this is, *pleasebegentle*, but I like it.  This was a commission I got from Batton Lash several years ago featuring his characters Wollf and Byrd along with Jei-san.
Supernatural Law is another of the many excellent creator owned comics which not enough people know about....
Also: I ordered a Supernatural Law book last night. According to Amazon, it should arrive Monday. |

This was a commission I got from Batton Lash several years ago featuring his characters Wollf and Byrd along with Jei-san.
Supernatural Law is another of the many excellent creator owned comics which not enough people know about....
Also: I ordered a Supernatural Law book last night. According to Amazon, it should arrive Monday.

Ha! I quoted you to inquire if this was a kickstarter thing of sorts, but it states in the quote box "Your Kickstarter embed will appear after you post...". That answers that then! I have never participated in a Kickstarter before. I get the concept, but what is the monetary goal, specifically, here? |

Oooh, I just went to the Kickstarter link. I shall donate. And I was going to state that I don't expect anything for donating (and I don't), but those are some lovely perks, especially to someone like me, who has never even read the stuff before. The book that is arriving to me on Monday is the book all the way to the left of the pile that he shows in the video. |

I first got into Usagi by way of the Ninja Turtles, I loved the episode he was in and his action figure was my favorite but it wasn't really until I was in middle school and was buying everything Turtles related that I came across the appearances of them in Usagi and then decided to buy that series too.
My reading habits over the years haven't been as steady as my appetite for Hellboy, Aliens, or Batman but it's up there as one of my favorite books none the less.

As a kid, I never watched any of the TMNT cartoons. My only interest in them was in the comics so I only tried to collect what issues/trades I could find in my area. So I never saw Usagi on TV (though I looked at some of the Youtube videos and no...that voice does not work)
As best as I could remember, I think I first encountered UY in a local book outlet in a mall. They had a small assortment of the DH trades for sale and the name struck my curiosity. Perusing over the titles they had, I ended up buying Vol 10 - Brink of Life & Death.
It ended up on my ever-growing pile of to-read books & trades at home. A little later, my interest in samurai culture, history, and warfare really blossomed. I think I may have read something about UY online somewhere as a good adaption of samurai legend and adventures. Then it clicked! I had bought Vol 10, which I had still yet to read. So I dug it out out of the pile, read it, LOVED it.
Then, using such sites as eBay and Amazon, I acquired as many of the trades as I could to read. I put the monthly title on my pull list (where it still is to this day). It remains only one of two titles that I buy in monthlies, trade, and HC. The consistent quality of the stories, the engaging characters, the terrific art, (not to mention the letters column and back cover color illustrations), all of it combines to make UY one of the best ongoing titles still on the rack.

Like many, I met Usagi through Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but failed to appreciate there was more Usagi out there.
Flash forward a decade or so and I notice Usagi comics, hear good things, and toy with the idea of picking one up, but fatefully do not.
Flash forward another decade and in 2007 I'm an active member of the community at comicbookresources. A poster named Kid Omega has a great thread where people discuss and debate and try to come up with a definitive list of the "25 best comics of all time". Usagi Yojimbo came up several times in the discussions. Some posters who had not steered me wrong (like Ray R.) highly recommend it, so I gave it a go. I bought volume 1, and I was sold.
9 years later it's one of my 4 favorite comic series, along with Amazing Spider-Man by Lee/Ditko and Calvin & Hobbes by Watterson, and Astro City by Busiek/Anderson/Ross.

Usagi had been on my radar for nearly a decade before I finally read it. Supernatural Law has been on my radar for perhaps 20 years now. Time to rectify it. Ordered " Tales of Supernatural Law". |

Hmmm, I don't remember when I first started reading Usagi, because I was really young. I think it was the issue where he gets his swords. I read through all of my Usagi comics so much that the covers fell off. Haha.
Once I found out that there were TPB of Usagi I started reading those; albeit out of order at first due to shortage in inventory on certain books. I think my exposure to Usagi was a bit different since I found it through family who bought it at the Japanese American craft fairs. Then, it became a tradition to buy Usagi books at the annual fairs from Heritage Source. I actually had no idea Usagi was a guest on the first rendition of TMNT on tv.
However, I remember being really stoked to read "Shades of Death" due to the appearance of the Turtles. It was an epic year as I think the action figure came out as well, so I got that too.

How did you first learn about Usagi? I saw UY graphic novels in the library.
What made you start reading? I was on vacation so I had time. It also helped that the graphic novels were free to check out in the library.
What was your first story? I can't remember. But I do remember reading A Kite Story and Samurai.
What makes you a Usagi fan? First, the stories and art are some of the best in comics. Second, the interactions with the other fans and Stan on the Usagi Yojimbo Dojo. Everyone there was just so friendly, helpful, knowledgable and fun. That positive community sealed the deal.

Absolutely. I doubt I ever would have gotten in as deeply as I did if it had not been for The Dojo. Growing up i was very much into TMNT. Most the video games and the action figures. I had the Usagi figure they put out. I didn't even know his name but i played with it a lot. almost 20 years later i see an Usagi Yojimbo book at my library, thought it looked interesting and then realized the connection. The library had up to book 23 and i read them all as fast as i could.
I swore i wasn't going to buy the series after reading the first few volumes from the library. After book 4 i was so hooked that i knew it would be a series i would want to reread a lot. So i started buying everything i could and i'm all caught up.
