Custom bound comics is become more and more popular, with more and more companies offering to not only bind your books, but also help in the cover design and other "features" to make your book as unique and stylish as you want.

Nice... I've been tempted a couple times, but every time I've seen internals hot there's more gutter loss (especially in the middle) than I can live with. They sure do look great on the shelf, though.

I was always tempted to do this until the Saga Editions came out. Other than the fact that The Special Edition doesn't match it, it's pretty much the set I've always wanted

I think I have come to the conclusion that I really want to consider doing one of these. Maybe two, due to the page count of the material that I want to include. I was always tempted to do this until the Saga Editions came out. Other than the fact that The Special Edition doesn't match it, it's pretty much the set I've always wanted I love the Saga editions, and I really like the Fantagraphics Special Edition, I even like my Italian omnibus editions (3 volumes so far with the first Saga volume dressed up to match the Special Editions), but these custom bound editions really give you some cool options for covers and table of content, endpapers, etc.... the opportunity to create a truly one of a kind book is really tempting. Of course, I do not plan to bind up anything from my actual comic collect, but I have been buying second copies of all the stuff I would like to see included in a project of this sort. Nice... I've been tempted a couple times, but every time I've seen internals hot there's more gutter loss (especially in the middle) than I can live with. They sure do look great on the shelf, though. I started an email dialogue with David Banks concerning my project idea and this is the second email back from him If this means scanning and actually reprinting each and every page, gutter loss would be completely eliminated. And I was already looking at the fact that I might have to scan and reprint some of the pages I wanted in the book just because I don't want any undesired content in there and at least one story is formatted in such a way that the only option is to reprint the pages.

Wow, I've never heard of anyone doing that! I was under the impression most people unstapled and bound actual comics... scanning seems like it COULD be way better, with the proper skill and equipment.
Is it prohibitively expensive, though?

Did he ever get back to you with a price? I have not heard anything back from him, but he does seem to be pretty busy completing a number of projects before a special show coming up in the early fall which Stan Saakai will be attending. (September 17-18 Omaha, NE)
FYI...A little more detail on the September Omaha, NE stop on the Sakai 2016 tour I met a couple of these guys at Kansas City Planet Comic Con last March and they are big fans of Stan's work. They are associated with a bindery(Houchen Bindery) and do a bunch of custom bound HC editions of comic collections. Send in your comics and they will create something really sweet. Custom covers, graphics, etc...They had a custom Usagi HC at the show which was brilliant. I received this message from one of the participants yesterday... "Thanks for your note! OmahaBound Entertainment will have full details posted shortly. However here are some details to tide you over. A Prestige Event Featuring Comic Legend Stan Sakai and accompanying textbook. • Friday September 16, 2016 o Opening of Gallery Exhibit An exhibition of original art of sequential pages, cover pages, comic strips, and a high-definition display of web comics will be featured in a public event, attended by Stan Sakai, and other guests participating in the event. • Saturday September 17, 2016 o Artist and Writer Workshop Host a public workshop for writers and artists. Professional guests act as hosts and mentors, interacting with workshop attendees giving information and suggestions. Panel breakout meetings to focus on specific topics. o Stan Sakai Panel Discussion Shortly after workshop ends, a moderated panel conversation and Q&A with Stan Sakai."
